Saturday rollups

We've one on Saturday and Sunday throughout the year if there's no competition on. Meet in the breakfast room between 9.15 and 10 . Can be anything between 2 and 20 turn up depending on the weather.

They have their merits if used properly, ie a mix of bookable and walk up times.

What does Blackmoor do Rich?

No tee booking, apart from competitions. We just queue up if there are more than a couple of groups waiting to go off, and have a bit of a chat. All very civilised compared to my previous club.

Exactly how it should be in a members club, worked a treat at my old club too

We have several, there's a group of 10-15 that goes out about 7, my growing group of 15-20 that goes about 8 and I understand other groups after us. The only issue this time of year is that the early group can't go early and they are notoriously slow so we get held up. There's also a big group that goes out on Sunday morning about 8 which I sometimes play in as well.

We don't have tee bookings (except monthly comps) so everything is roll up, each group has found themselves a slot and everyone knows when the tee is busy\quiet so it works quite well. Newcomers are welcomed into the two groups I play with and I would guess the other groups.

Personally I'd hate to go back to a tee booking system, I think it was raised a few years ago and quickly batted back down by the membership.

same at my place

We have a BRS but on non comps days it isn't applicable so the rolls up carry on there are 2 on a Saturday, a Tuesday evening and Friday lunch also one of the groups is a designated society and organise days out too.

we have rollups most days, with no bookings until after 10. In the week, when I am hardly ever there, they have seniors, ladies and a Friday comp - all are run as overall comps, although the seniors have been known to moan if there are no crumpets afterwards to go with several bottles of wine. Saturdays and Sunday one of the pro's is in the bar and you give your name and are paired in order of when you come in - no overall swindle etc but always 4-ball better-ball with a few quid on the result of front, back and overall (usually 5-15 ).Sunday is the same but there is also a big swindle called the Sunday Boys - with a winner for the day and your result counting to the overall - best 20 rounds over the year - and they have a big prize-giving dinner/piss up at the end of the year. I like the mix of roll up and then pre-arranged games following on

We have no tee booking, which is great, so have a whole rash of Swindles. I normally make the Saturday lunchtime one, 4 balls, £5 in, 2 shot cut for the winner (my swindle h/c is more realistic than my official) most 4 balls have a little match play between themselves too. Great fun and a brilliant way to get to play with lots of better players. We have a couple of pros at our place who play in them too, so you get the double joy of watching someone play properly and a few tips along the way.

Yep. We do our draw the previous Saturday, and the names go on the sheet on the Wednesday. Usually get 16 out of 18 regulars and a few one off's who can't get a game with their usual crowd. We'll take all comers so they get a game/fixed up. £3 each in... £1 goes to the Air Ambulance, 50p to the caterer, who does us a platter of sandwiches and chips, and the winner takes the balance.

Just to add, our's is one of severalgroups on a Saturday. There's a couple on Tuesday and Thursday + one on Wednesday. Sunday is a huge winter league with a number of independant 4balls slotted in too.

Yup.
We have quite a few.
Sat morning the Seniors go out at 07:30 ball drawn out of a hat £1 each

Sat morning the group I play with go out at 11:00 ball drawn out of a hat £2 each

Tues morning the Seniors go out at 07:30 ball drawn out of a hat £1 each

Thurs morning the Seniors go out at 07:30 ball drawn out of a hat £1 each

I often play with the seniors on a weekday morning after finishing a nightshift

I used to play in your Sat 11am one - was organised at the time by a certain Northern Irish very good mate of mine from back then (AS). Still play in our Sat 11am one. Quite a few during the week and new members are encouraged to go along. Our Secretary will often turn up with a new member and do the introductions.

There is a risk of it getting too big. 16-24 usual numbers. We keep entry to £1 so that winnings (usually 1st and 2nd, sometimes 3rd also if numbers are larger) are just a nice wee bonus but nothing much. Also winner gets his 'roll-up handicap' cut by 0.1 for every £1 won - this to avoid banditry / regular winners.

Truth is that if you turn up as a four ball and find yourself in the middle of our roll-up going off, you take your rightful place on the tee. So if you are the only complete 4 ball waiting by the first tee even in the middle of the roll-up going off then you have the tee - regardless. I would argue strongly against the 1st tee being booked for our or any roll-up.

Ours is a public course however we always have 4 slots booked on a Saturday morning for our roll up. £5.00 in the pot with the cash being divided between overall winner, winner of back 9 and winner of front.

The handicap system of 'The Saturday Club' is pretty penal (1.5 shots off for winning each of the back/front/overall plus 0.5 off for every point over 34) but it does mean that you don't get the same people winning the pot week in, week out.

After 2 good weeks I am now playing off 10 (club handicap 20) which means I'll be donating £5 per week for the foreseeable.....

We still have them - I join one @ 10 every Saturday. Its a great way to be introduced to members if your new as well. that's how I got to know people to start with and have played with the same group which varies between 8 and 12 depending on the time of year for about 8 years now.

We have them on non comp days but we have a booking system so we just book 4-5 times a week and we turn up and put the balls in a hat or whoever turns up first.

There are 3 squads like that at our club and we all have our times of playing, we can have between 10 - 18 depending on what shift or if guys are back from offshore playing, its competitive as hell with a weekly email going out from one of the guys slaughtering everyone a great laugh and good squad of lads ,we also have nights out and barbies in the summer

Much the same here Steve,we play same time each spare day without a comp.Great bunch of lads who rip the pish out of each other and no sympathy is given. We had the "Yourlot" Xmas day out couple week back that was great banter and we will continue to do the same sort of thing going forward.

Yeah Alan everyone takes a hit its all good banter,we had 18 at our Xmas day out 2 weeks ago, some dayout that was. We have a winter eclectic, stable ford and 3 putt league during the winter ,good craic and it keeps everyone on there toes.

Must admit i have the hump with the swindle arrangement at my club at the moment. So much so i am trawling club web sites to see if can find a club with a better arrangement. Any recommendations, i am based near Junction 8 on the M25?
My lot refuse to draw balls for the groupings and insist on making up their own fourballs. The idea is you turn up, put your name in a book and ask if anybody is looking for a game. This is every saturday and sunday when there is not an official competition on. Trouble is a lot of guys 'make up' during the week or in the car park or have a regular four they play with week in week out which is nice if you are in a group like that but a pain if you aren't. Recently i turned up last but not late and the last 2 groups to go out said they were made up and to wait and see if anybody else turns up and to play with them. No one turned up so i went to the tees at 1 and 10 to ask if we could rearrange into 3 groups of three which should be the protocol. The first group said make a five ball with the other group. The second group said why us, can't you play with the other lot.
This is bred out of a desire to have a 4 ball better ball amongst themsleves in what is really an individual stableford competition. I felt really welcome at this point and realised the only way i would get a game would be to start an argument so i went home without a game. The club are not interested, they say the swindle is down to the members to sort out amongst themselves. I have said that the club should get involved as it reflects on them when new members can't get a game because of the unwillingness of old established members to mix it up a bit.
