Does your club still have a traditional Saturday rollup? You know, 10, 15, 20 guys all putting a couple of quid in the middle and pulling balls out of a hat.

So many clubs now seem to have online booking systems and this seems to have forced people into forming their own groups of 3 or 4 and booking their own times. To me this just isn't progress, the old fashioned swindles are the lifeblood of golf clubs. They play an important part in building camaraderie and also helping new members integrate into the club.

I'd like to hear your thoughts and also if your club still has a weekend rollup?

Yes theres a roll up at our place on non comp days. Weve just had a booking system introduced but at least for now it only operates from 11am onwards so doesnt affect things like the roll up

Saturdays are competition days but Sunday at 8.30 is highspot of week. Up to 25, but usually 15-20 guys paying £2 a head for am-am
(3 or 4 ball depending on numbers). All welcome but max h'cap allowance is 18.
Club golf at its best!

Yep, in the spike bar at 8.30 Saturday morning £2 in the pot ball in the hat even on comp days! Sunday morning theres a betterball swindle again is £2 in the pot and ball in the bag but it's a little earlier!

Even with an online system just block book 3/4/5 tee times for your swindle? Pro at my old place just blocks out 9-9.30 every weekend morning when there's not a comp for the "posse"!

If you know your pro/secretary pretty well just have quiet word about block bookings for your swindle if they play at a regular time every week!

We have several, there's a group of 10-15 that goes out about 7, my growing group of 15-20 that goes about 8 and I understand other groups after us. The only issue this time of year is that the early group can't go early and they are notoriously slow so we get held up. There's also a big group that goes out on Sunday morning about 8 which I sometimes play in as well.

We don't have tee bookings (except monthly comps) so everything is roll up, each group has found themselves a slot and everyone knows when the tee is busy\quiet so it works quite well. Newcomers are welcomed into the two groups I play with and I would guess the other groups.

Personally I'd hate to go back to a tee booking system, I think it was raised a few years ago and quickly batted back down by the membership.

Still going at our place too, Sat and Sun through the winter, Sun only through the season. We have just opened our online booking system so we shall see how this affects the roll ups once the course gets busy again when the weather lets up (if it ever does).

My club is Swindle crazy... and due to this culture its impossible to book a tee time for a friendly game.

Saturday & Sunday mornings we have 3 swindles all £10 each and tee off at 8:30, 10:00 and 11:00 generally having 20-30 players participating in each of them.

Tuesday and Fridays 14:30 swindles £15 each and a 9 hole 17:00 swindle on Wednesday evening £5

its good to get intigrated and I actively play in 11am Sunday swindle and its great fun.

Yep. We do our draw the previous Saturday, and the names go on the sheet on the Wednesday. Usually get 16 out of 18 regulars and a few one off's who can't get a game with their usual crowd. We'll take all comers so they get a game/fixed up. £3 each in... £1 goes to the Air Ambulance, 50p to the caterer, who does us a platter of sandwiches and chips, and the winner takes the balance.

I go to one on Saturday 9am. Great bunch. Everybody gets a game. Names are drawn out of a hat into 4 balls and away you go. Usually play 4 Ball matchplay format. Great way to meet new people and would much prefer this than playing with same people every week.

We used to have one at 8am each week that'd have 12-16 regulars and was really good - we'd put £5 in the pot and would all get a drink at the end with the winner taking what was left.

It was great whilst it was the regular group but then too many people wanted to get involved and it got too big with up to 30 people some weeks. This created issues with long waits for tee times and too much money being involved - money being the route of all even and all that caused no end of issues with different opinions over how the pot should be split etc. We also had quite a few occassions where someone would turn up, who didn't normally play with us, just because they were playing well and fancied their chances of taking the pot!

This got disbanded about 18 months ago and we're now back to the original regulars but we have to do a draw during the week to predetermine the groups for the weekend.

As much as I like to meet and play with new people the roll up became a victim of it's own success :(

Yup.
We have quite a few.
Sat morning the Seniors go out at 07:30 ball drawn out of a hat £1 each

Sat morning the group I play with go out at 11:00 ball drawn out of a hat £2 each

Tues morning the Seniors go out at 07:30 ball drawn out of a hat £1 each

Thurs morning the Seniors go out at 07:30 ball drawn out of a hat £1 each

I often play with the seniors on a weekday morning after finishing a nightshift

Sadly these have never existed at the clubs I have been a member of and that is a pity. No tee booking times but people go out in their own groups and have there own little roll ups but nothing that people can just turn up to. My group is getting bigger so hopefully we can start our own one next year. I really think that a weekend roll up helps integrate new members into a club and it is just a pity that the clubs near me do not see it the same way.

We have a Saturday roll up, as well as three during the week. If it wasn't for the Saturday one I probably would not have joined the Club.

Ours is on Sunday at 8am. Roughly 24 golfers but not all turn up every week, there is a hardcore of golfers about 12 who turn up every week, and we then have the not so regular. £1.50 with £1 to the winner and 50p for NTP. To stop newbies winning they have to play 3 times to get an unofficial handicap before they can take the winners pot, NTP can be won on the first attempt. We must play of a handicap of at least 2 short of our official h/c. This can be done because we play from the yellow tees and allow gimmes.
Once in the bar afterwards we all have to pay extra for any misdemeanor on the course, blobs, 3 putts, captains bunker, farting, posing etc etc, these 'fines' are then put towards the Captains charity.

we came under pressure to provide bookable times at weekends, and currently retain 8.30 - 10.30 roll up times when the weekend swindle players head out on non-competition days. £5 in the pot - prizes distributed according to number of entries and set formulae. swindle winner handicaps are adjusted for future swindles (re-set when the clocks change twice a year) and all swindle results are made available to the handicap annual review :) ie it's well run, fairly handicaped and doesn't get the attention of pot hunters!!!

Not a fan of online booking Gordon ?

Plenty at ours.

The ones I get involved in are;

Tuesday 11.30: 10 hole
Thursday 10.00: 10 hole
Friday: 12.30: 18 Holes
Saturday 08.30: 18 holes

There is also;

Wednesday 16.00: 10 hole (winter) 18 in the summer
Sunday 09.00: 18 holes

There's a large group of us (40+) that arrange matches against each other at the weekends but we also put into an overall pot which can be well worth winning.
