played recently and one of the guys drove straight into the small pond on the 5th...so he hit a provisional straight on to the green.when we walked up to the pond it was empty and his ball was sat on a bit of dry mud so he walked into the 'pond' and played his shot on to the green and putted for par.should he have recieved a penalty for playing out of the pond as normally that ball would count as lost????
is a water hazard no longer a hazard when its dry??

Dry or not....if you can find your ball and want to play it (without grounding your club) out of a hazard, that's fine.

I would have to say that the player in question would have to take a drop as the harzard is still a hazard, unless it has been stated otherwise. He would then proceed in playing the orignal ball and pick up the provisional.

You are entitled to play a ball out of a hazard and as realgolferuk stated the only stipulation is you cant ground your club.

You can play a ball in a hazard. Look at tha guy at the Irish Open recently choosing to play from within the confines of the hazard or Van de Velde thinking about playing from the burn.

If the ball is in the hazard a player has the option to play it without grounding the club. Just because the pond is dry doesn't make any difference to his entitlement to play it as it lies

the only question is, where did he play his provisional from? I think it should have been anywhere on a point in line with where the ball entered the pond all the way back to the tee if he wanted but not teed up.

It's late, but as far as I can recall....

If you find the ball in the hazard you can if you wish play it as it lies without touching anything in the hazard without penalty.

If you can't find it and KNOW that it went in then you can drop under penalty at any point behind keeping point of entry and pin in line or back to where original shot was played (including teeing up if back on tee). In this context, if you can't find it but don't 100% know that it went into the hazard then it's back to the original place of shot and replay with 2 shot penalty as it is a lost ball.

Thus, only if you DON'T KNOW if it went into the hazard do you play a provisional ball as, if you can't find it, it is a lost ball so you play a ball from the original place.

My understanding is this. If you hit a ball into a water hazard, water or not, then you cannot hit a provisional ball. You only hit a Prov if you think your ball may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds. I think it’s a two-stroke penalty for hitting a prov. I’m not sure on the penalty, but I’m sure you cannot hit a prov if you know your ball is in the water hazard.

The only exception to this could be…..lets say your playing along the side of a links course and there is rough bordering the water hazard line/beach. If you think the ball may be lost in the rough, outside the water hazard, then you can hit a prov. Clearly in these situations you consult your playing partners. If you then go up to the area and you can’t find the ball then you have to assume it is lost outside the water hazard. You can then go on and play the provisional. Now, this is where it gets tricky. If you go up and you find the ball in the water hazard, playable or unplayable, whatever, you must abandon the provisional ball under no penalty. You do not have the option of playing the prov ball.
