RRP of balls. Is it getting beyond ridiculous?

After watching the Rick shields video on lake/refurbished proV’s, you’d be better off buying Slazenger Tour Spin Distance Soft Feels as at least they’d be consistent and last more than a hole.
There’s a difference between refurb balls he had and lake balls. They were stocking mind. It has been know that a refurb being a top flight inside and painted as a pro v.

I bought some pearl A ad333 from a forum member known for selling good lake balls…. they were definitely not good quality and the painted name wore off most within 6-9 hole. I took them to my local range, hit them there and let them cycle through the range over coming months.

Smiffy hit the nail on the head, if you’re good enough to need a proV then you shouldn’t lose many and cost just over the price of a Starbucks, good value at 5p per shot, if your wild enough to be losing 2-3 a round invest the money in lessons and buy cheaper balls.

I understand the sentiment if you lose 2 to 3 balls per round, starts to get expensive pretty quickly.

Placebo effect is huge, but that's true in most sports and having faith in the ball you're hitting is pretty key to me.

I would never buy a box of ProV1s. They are designed for a elite players with fast swings so I'd be stupid to use them even if they weren't 50 quid a box. Plenty of other balls are longer for me and more suited to my game, and cost less anyway.

The balls I buy tend to be £30-35 and I don't mind spending that as usually a ball will last me 3 rounds or so before I lose it. Hence I'm only buying a couple of boxes a year.

I lost 6 today, and I only had 6 in the bag, "luckily" I lost the last ball on the 18th.

I blame it on the fact that I had flu and Covid shots yesterday and was feeling a little weak today so was forcing things.

Simply wait until the new ones come out and buy last season's ones. Or do the Titleist 4 for 3 or the Taylor Made 4 dozen packs to get them at a reasonable price.

Lost ProV1s.........

When they first came out they were no where as good as other balls on the market at the time such as the Strata, Precept Double cover and the Maxfli Revolution, very poor spin levels on comparison and often inconsistent ball to ball

However it did not stop loads of players using them . I must have sold around 6 dozen 'one hit wonders' on ebay the year they came out.

I don't use Pro V 1's, unless I find one, but do stick to the same type of ball normally

The comments above about consistency and feel (being irrelevant for most amateurs) may well be true for most shots, but I can definitely differentiate between balls when putting. I find a Pro V quite "clicky" and prefer the softer feel of a chrome soft. The only reason I will use a single ball type and avoid some of the cheaper ones, is that the don't feel as nice off the putter and I can't gauge distance quite as well.

Like has been mentioned earlier, almost all Titelist balls go the same distance, but there is a massive difference between them (and between other brands' different balls) when pitching, chipping and especially putting....for me anyway.

Zero difference between distances of any golf balls when putting. The forces involved in a putter striking the ball are too low for the construction to influence the energy imparted.
Different sound and feel, yes, but by time you hear or feel, the ball is long gone.

With everything in life there's things I just can't afford to buy 'top of the line', there's things I could afford to buy TOTL but don't and maybe there's even things where I'm happy to pay for 'the best'

Golf balls fall firmly into the middle group. I think I have £50 in my wallet right now but no way is Titleist getting it, especially for something that's classed as a disposable item (sooner or later virtually every golf ball used on the course will be lost) So I top out at about £25 a doz, less if I can and generally stick with one type preferring a soft ball
(those Inesis soft balls from decathlon really are good value at £15 a doz when I can travel to the store and otherwise I stick with Mizuno/Callaway softs) .........

...... but just while typing the above and saying I wouldn't 'throw away' 50 on golf balls just to lose them... I realised more than once I've spent more than that for 4 cigars and set fire to them! So I guess you can ignore the above :whistle:

Rubbish!!!
The strength of my game is lag putting and I haven't noticed any difference in performance from a callaway warbird all the way to a premium ball. Unless I'm putting with a Dunlop DDH I can't even say I feel any difference either.
People who place their faith in a particular balls are usually the ones that make the statement "the shaft is the engine". I just smile and leave them to it

Last autumn I bought 24 of these for £24.

Going to be using them again through to April (loads left) along with various foundlings.
Mostly use Srixon Soft Feels in the summer (also fairly cheap) and occasionally ProV1, but only when conditions are perfect.
I won 3 ProV1s in a charity AmAm this year - so that's all I need for next year.

For the past 12 Months I have been using Seed SD01. Direct to Consumer and decent balls at that. I can't bring myself to pay £50 a dozen

I aim to be consistent in the ball I use from one round to the next…but I am not in the least bit obsessive about it. Titleist ProV1(x) if I have any, if not then whatever I have picked up as long as it doesn‘t feel sponge soft or rock hard. I honestly don’t notice any great difference; where the difference is in what the clubhead is doing when it hits the ball. Once I can manage that reasonably well I’ll maybe start worrying about the ball itself.

When I buy balls I will be using credit in the shop I have, usually from winnings, and I’ll treat myself to TV1(x). I’ll use the new balls sparingly, and I’ll not use them when out for a few holes as I try stuff and can lose a ball or two.

This year I bought a load of TM Tour Response. I can't tell any difference between them and the more expensive balls.
About £35 a dozen if memory serves.

Do you believe that all shafts are born equal?
