Rory hits spectator on the jaw.

Very poor from Rory not only not to shout vigorously but also from his caddy. You'd think one of them would make an effort. It will get to the stage especially in the US when someone is killed or life changing injured and they do sue the player and/or the PGA. Not a good performance by McIlroy either

I assume at 300 yards a shout is worthless, even though I think they absolutely should as an example.

But whilst no one would hear a shout, many will be watching and would see a club held aloft and take cover. Others would follow suit

Should this be encouraged? I see Bubba often does it, often for a playing partner who has neither done likewise, nor shouted

Am I missing something here or are aren't those stewards / marshals (?) standing on the tee with paddles that they flap once they see the direction the ball is heading in after the tee shot, meant to be signaling to their colleagues 300 yards further down the course of possible dangers?

It should then be the job of these second (let's call them spotters) to shout 'Fore' in the vicinity of where the ball is likely to land and thus alert those in that immediate area to the potential problem.

Notwithstanding this then I also believe that the player should, without exception, be required to shout 'FORE!' on any errant shot as loudly as they possibly can. There is no excuse for them not to do so. It is simply a matter of following correct etiquette. Should they fail in this matter then a one-shot penalty might serve to sharpen their concentration in future instances.

It's really quite simple and if implemented to the letter then totally unambiguous.

Fix it overnight by implementing the rule as follows.

If a Spectator is hit by a golf ball and there is not a clear shout of fore by the player or his playing partners then everyone in the group will have a penalty shot added to their score.

Problem solved.

What problem will be solved? People will still get hit.

The problem of deliberately endangering the paying public.

Deliberately? Going to have to prove that

They are never going to punish players for not shouting four and certainly not shot penalties - ridiculous to even suggest it

The fans know the dangers and at times the ball will go near then and could potentially hit them - the risks are known , yes the players or marshals or caddies should shout fore but within the pro game it’s tough to even hear the shout 300 yards away when everything is going on.

So you solve a problem by punishing not only the person that hit the ball but the others in the group as well who didn't hit it so are in no way responsible for causing the injury..

Yeah that's gonna solve nothing except for creating a downing of tools of players and who would blame them.

Rory hits the shot he should be one facing punishment if there is any not those who are not at fault.

I shout for my playing partners regularly.

The threat of your playing partners getting punished if you don't shout would very quickly put manners on players.

So do I.. Doesn't mean in the event of me not shouting on odd occasion I should be penalised for their errant shot. It wouldn't lead to manners at all it would lead to players looking at bringing sanctions against the tour for unfair working regulations.

Amazing what the human body is tuned to pick up on that we don't necessarily realise; sights, smells, sounds, all base instincts that are hardwired in, assuming it has the opportunity.

If we don't shout we'll never know if it is worthwhile or not.

Several players over the years have admitted that they don't shout in the hope that the ball gets a favourable bounce back off a spectator into play rather than bounding further into the rough.

I also agree that its time that the Tours took a tougher stance on this and also agree its only a matter of time till someone gets a "serious" injury. Its happened at club level golf where people have lost eye sight etc. It will happen at a pro tour event at some point. The player has a responsibility to shout a warning, this should be enforced rigorously.

Also its not "ridiculous" to suggest it as that is the posters opinion, he/she is welcome to that opinion. I'm of the opinion that it needs addressing and fast. Its ignorant and "obnoxious" and potentially life changing. Lets just try and be courteous and do the right thing.

Will be interesting to know which players - have heard it been “suggested” but never seen or heard an actual player say it

Lots of sports have those dangers where balls are going to go hurtling towards them - cricket , golf , football and even rugby there is a danger of a ball causing harm - it’s all part of the acceptance of being at the sports event hence why there are disclaimers and the tour will use that . It’s not a new thing - players have been going into crowds for decades and players have not shouted fore for decades.

I believe it’s a ridiculous suggestion to penalise players and playing partners shots when a ball goes into the crowd without a shout of fore - fine them maybe but I don’t even see that happen but shot penalties to the whole group ?! Ridiculous

So you now believe its ridiculous. See how much better that reads instead of ridiculing the poster.

Ah so it’s going to turn into another Rory bash - have you seen his result this year ? Seems to have won with that driver already this year as well as multiple high places. 🙄

You really are a bit of a drip aren’t you Phil?

Chill out man👍🏻👍🏻
