Roll-Up/Swindle/Fuddle Format

Having read much of the Roll-Up Handicap thread and whether sch things need/should/must be included in a persons handicap record, and what folks might do to ensure the score wasn't/was acceptable for handicap purposes....it got me to thinking about what sort of formats such roll up groups play....individual, pairs, team, stableford/medal etc.

So, thinking of the roll-up group you might be most closely associated with....what is your most commonly played format?

All three of the groups I am associated with play skins as the preferred format. Gimme's are given (normally no more than 18 inches), unless the putt is for a 3 pointer which may win a skin, or it is for a win/half in any side bet that might be going on between the players in the group. Some groups may elect to throw the balls up and play a bit of 4BBB alongside the skins, if it's a 3 ball group then we have our own weird 3 ball matchplay format that someone dreamed up whilst on a bad acid trip one night.

We play individual stableford but with a 4bbb match in each group. Gimmes and oob drops - non handicap rounds

We play singles stableford for the kitty and in one swindle we always put in GP cards (you cannot win the kitty if you do not put in a card), if there is a 4 in the group we also play pairs BB stableford for who puts the money

Play individual stableford, plus 2 from 3 for a team prize. Played under the rules of golf (ie no gimmees etc) as it sometimes coincides with a Pro-shop comp,. So everyone has to play by the same rules.

Individual Stableford off Handicap Index, gimmes, including a 4bbb match. Some people play £1 birdies, sand saves, nearest pins etc, etc within their 4ball.

Our weekly seniors roll up is individual stableford, plus a team event once a month.....sometimes 3 or 4 man teams, sometimes scramble, sometimes progressive (2 score, then 3 scores then 4 scores).

No gimmes, off index when winter rules apply, but now off course HC % when off measured yellows.

Several different formats depending on club.

First club I was at: Individual stableford for everybody, plus £3 inside each 4 ball on 2vs2. Winning or 2nd resulted in handicap reduction for 6 months or more.

Second club: 4 ball, 2 of 4 to count. Each group plays to how far under par each group gets using handicap. 25% off playing handicap to start with. Example: Somebody who pars a hole but gets a shot results in -1. I eagled the first hole last Saturday which gave us -2, somebody else got a pt as well so after one hole we were -3....about the last good thing I did all day. Winners usually end up around -18 or so at this time of year. Reasonable gimme's only. I stopped playing with this group in the past because people were giving stupidly long gimmes.

Third club: 4 ball, 2 of 4 to count. I tried to get them to go to 3 of 4 once in a while....just about got lynched. Total Stableford pts. My group was 79pts yesterday which is bad, winners on 93.
Very big plus for me....everybody putts out. Also money back to usually the top 3 teams, nobody gets that much which I like. £3 entry.

Mostly individual stableford, does change to team comps if the numbers are right for a three ball or fourball. It can then be best two from four and all to score on par threes or par fives. These team comps don’t take place on a day when there is a club comp running as lads will go in the club comp and individual fuddle.
Payout on front nine winner, back nine winner, overall and nearest the pins on the par threes. It works well wihtout any fallouts.
The winner of front, back, overall gets docked a shot. If you don’t win in four rounds you get a shot back.

We play individual stableford to a rollup handicap (which could multiple shots lower than a player’s WHS handicap) …and if out in fours the four will normally pair up and play a fun 4bbb match.

Many of the rollup also at the same time put a card in for handicap purposes by entering the Saturday stableford comp that the club runs every Saturday. If I do that I play the rollup stableford to rollup handicap, but do not take ANY gimmes and score my club stableford card to WHS handicap…though in truth for that I just record my gross on each hole and let the system work out my pts.

Whether or not the above is strictly allowed I do not know - and frankly do not really care…as for me it meets the essence of WHS by my putting in cards on a regular basis, whilst at the same time having an enjoyable and competitive social knock with my rollup mates.

We will occasionally play what we call an Am-Am, out in threes and scoring stableford best two from three. Again at the same time many will enter the club Sat stableford and put a card in for WHS.

When it comes to the results

The Saturday Swindle - we put £2 in the pot , the winner gets half the other half goes to the team

We do HC cuts based on 36 points - anything above and we use the old .1 - .3 system etc

If someone wants to put a card in they can , everyone else mainly plays gimmies etc


On the Sunday

It’s £5 in , top 4 get prize money

We run our own CSS - with people getting cut depending on that , mainly gimmies

Once a month off the whites and if you want to put your card in you can
