Unfortunately golf isn't a cheap sport anymore but most clubs allow you to pay the joining fee over a number of years, think it's 3 years at my club.
When it comes to 'deal-breakers' it's a general rule but I'm sure we would all make an exception here and there for the right club. If there was a club that ticked all the other boxes, but had a joining fee, I guess I would try hard to make it work. But it is something that puts me off looking at a particular club, that's all.

I guess the dynamics of life have changed. People used to find a job then stay in it for many years. Now people often change job every few years and if that means moving areas it makes it hard to justify a large joining fee.

I would happily play off matts in winter to improve the course for the rest of the year.

The course and accessibility is my priority. Couldn’t really give a toss about the rest of it.

I don’t want to be indoctrinated into a club or a roll up or a swindle. I don’t want to be told to tuck my shirt in by some overly officious busy body. I just want to to be left alone to play golf.
Amen.

In response to the OP -

I think you already know you have it good at your club. Why change something that's already working well for you - unless it simply is that its longer and you want that challenge?

You've not played for too long - you could refuse this offer and probably get the same offer again next year!

My dealbreakers-

Value for money
Regular comps - with divisions!
Proximity to home
