Anyone else not keen on Texas Scrambles ?

Scramble at my place yesterday...

Par 69
Winners.....48.9
Mmmm
20 to 22 sometimes 23 under par is the general winning score around these parts now, I spent some time recently looking into the scores for all teams in a few recent scrambles, not exactly rocket science i'm happy to admit but I reckon around 90% of the teams have little to no chance of winning, or at least would have to play absolutely incredibly to have any chance

Our pro day at the weekend was won with a score of only 16 under.

Cheating is clearly the easiest way to win these comps, open ones. That wouldn’t happen in a member only comp.

Yeah saw that and was quite surprised, I assumed it was blowing a hoolie, I drove back home from Oban and it was pretty windy all the way down

Our TS was won by a team scoring 50pts
Handicaps were
21
22
27
18
Handicaps allowances for 4 ball texas scrambles, means 48-50 points is your normal 36 points and only a par/average score
4 x 0.0 handicaps will have no shot allowances, but will disappointed to not shoot a minimum 12 under par
4 x 6 handicaps will get maybe 5 shots, and their minimum would be 6 to 8 under
4 x 18 handicaps will get 12 to 13 shots, and shoot around par
So its not difficult to see that 48 points is only average
The art in Texas Scrambles is picking a team that work well together, but it's not unreasonable to find that 20 under after stroke allowance is what is need to win if there is a large turnout, but the usual comment, "We were 13 under and come nowhere" when thats just shooting average

50 points is only 14 under “par” not that great a score really.

sorry , I put points when I meant strokes .

Texas scrambles are in my opinion a good way for people new to golf to learn basic fundamentals eg etiquette, when to check in, how to fill in a score card etc. They also meet new people and discover they are not the worst golfers in the club.

For those worthy aims to really work, the teams need to be drawn, which is probably the fairest way of doing things, but not what I usually hear being done.

Agree but not when Saturday is the only comp of the week in peak season.

Yeah my wife, a new golfer herself, started an informal ladies golf group (mostly beginners) that meet once a month to play a scramble. For some its their only golf for other regular players its a bit of a change

Well, you wouldn't have a fun competition at that time, you'd have it on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon. Keep the Saturday for serious comps
Aren't all recreational amateur club competitions supposed to just be a bit of added fun?
Serious competitions are played at the elite level and don't involve handicaps (other than to ballot entries).
