Did anyone else hear Vassos Alexander speaking on Five Live this morning, talking about how Richmond Golf Club refused to let him play wearing tailored shorts a couple of weeks ago "because the pocket was in the wrong place"?! It was the second hottest day of the year and he had to wear his waterproofs instead. What planet are they on?!

I didn't hear about it but it sounds rediculous.

One of my mates played golf a while ago and he tells me of a time his mate was about to tee off, he was at the top of the backswing and someone shouted at him from the hole next to him to took his shirt in at the back as it had come out. Just rediculous some places are. If it was me I'd of complained after the round at the timing of the shouting. Top of the backswing is just downright rude and stupid. To be fair I'd of probaby lost it with the guy there and then and had to of walked off in a fit of rage before I did something rather inappropriate on the course. :)

If the pocket was on the side of the leg then they're cargo shorts - not smart enough for golf at some clubs. Might sound snobbish but the club have set a standard that they want to enforce, no problem with that so well done Richmond.
Surely it's up to the individual to read the clubs clothing policy before they turn up? They're normally on the club websites. Going on radio and moaning won't likely get him a game in future.
Even if we don't like it the rules are set and need to be adhered to until the club says otherwise.

That's just it...he did check the requirement regarding tailored shorts and appropriate socks etc, so he thought he was well within their requirements. I had a quick look on their site and there's not much info about anything let alone a dress code. I assume he either asked his mate who is a member there or rang the pro shop.

RICHMOND - that's one to tick off my 'to do list' - can't stand utterly pointless rules like that.

Iv played richmond a few times and it is full of mega rich, know it all idiots. if you dont drive a porsch then you are an alien,The course is so well looked after but expensive even a drink of red bull is £2.80. The range is £10 for 100 balls when at my club its only £5 for 100 balls. I do hate going there but its convienant as its only 2mile away.

If you want to wear cargo shorts or something similar (for the life of me I can think why you would) then don't bother with Sundridge Park or most of the other members clubs that I can think of in s/London, Kent, Surrey, Sussex areas.

It starts by dropping little things and lettin people get away with things and ends with jeans and football shirts

Technically the latest England shirt is a collared shirt and so would be acceptable. A mate of mine played a round in his on the day of the opening England World Cup game. I'm sure some of the old boys were biting their tongues. I thought it was brilliant! (I'd never do it myself though! :D)

If he wanted to wear cargo shorts as it sounds as though these were he could have nipped down the road to Richmond Park. Virtually anything goes there which is a shame as they are two pretty decent pay and play tracks.

Richmond Golf CLub is strange though. You aren't made welcome and you can positively feel members eyes boring into you on the first and in the locker room. Not a friendly place which is a shame as the course isn't bad. And to be honest given their attitude you can keep Di Stewart, even in shorts

Wear trousers and a polo shirt, that's it, nice, simple and smart. It doesn't cost the earth but if you really want to wear cargo's and footy shirts then go play a muni. You will not be missed on the private tracks and it will save both parties any potential embarrassment. What is snobby about a £10.00 pair of kecks and a £5.00 polo shirt?

No they're not. It's quite possible to have pockets on the legs of shorts and them not be cargo shorts, Mizuno for one even manufacture golf shorts that have leg pockets.
