Ridiculous snobbery

I am making the assumption that these shorts are the type that have an 'outside' pocket near the bottom of the shorts?

If so then the club are completely within their rights and correct. They're not smart shorts and they're certainly not tailored.

I have a pair similar and I wouldn't dream of using them for playing golf. Obviously, I will stand corrected if I misconstrued the story.

I just think that there is a dress code for a reason. First it's cargo shorts and then it's jump suits.

that's the danger of generalisations. I have a pair of shorts with side pockets that are 'tailored' but if you want to play a course you conform with local rules or go elsewhere.

To me, if you play away from home, on a private track, there will be a dress code in place, and any one who has played for a while will know what is defo conforming. You can't go wrong wearing Ashworth basically. Anything a bit jeansy, or with external pockets, any footy tops, anything with slogans or big logos, you know you'll be pushing it. Stick with the simple stuff, tailord trousers or shorts (no elastic, drawstring or external pockets), a polo, socks, golf shoes, hat on the right way round, you'll be fine. It isn't difficult.

I did get reprimanded once,for not wearing a belt,apparently
one of the members reported me to the captain, halfway into the round I had to take of my sweater because it was getting
warm, luckily I did have my belt with albeit,in the golf bag.

Wear trousers and a polo shirt, that's it, nice, simple and smart. It doesn't cost the earth but if you really want to wear cargo's and footy shirts then go play a muni. You will not be missed on the private tracks and it will save both parties any potential embarrassment. What is snobby about a £10.00 pair of kecks and a £5.00 polo shirt?
