What are people thoughts on rescue chippers like the link these: Chipper

Had been struggling with my little up and down chips on the edge of the greens and had bought this club ages ago basically to use left handed if stuck behind a tree etc decided to give it a go and was so much easier to hit and could judge distances to give me 1 putts pretty regularly. Got quite a bit of abuse from the mates I was playing with for using it but it did the job I wanted, what would be your thoughts if someone used this club for anything within say 10 yards of the green?

For info I average 100-115 at the moment (actually hit 100 for the first time on saturday, previous best 115... its starting to click!)

You will get stick for it, but if it works, don't let the stick you get put you off!

And congrats on dropping 15 shots from your PB!

Forum regular, Fragger, will be along shortly...He's an expert on chippers. ;)

I can chip and pitch quite well to be fair but I use my hybrid aswell as a chipping aid... It works well when I am a distance from the pin with a long green to work with as it just rolls out like a putt.

i joke about chippers all the time dont see why anyone cant use a 7i or such but whatever floats ur boat

personally depending on the shot i use ANY* of my irons to chip with

*except 1 iron

ALSO
I didnt think the 2 faced clubs were allowed anymore?

(left & right handed,in comp play)

I play off 12 and use a bronte chipmaster which is 25 years' old.

Last year Cleveland brought a club ou whch was supposed to be a 4 in 1 club which I bought but did not work for me.

You may have the proverbial taken out of you, I do by lower figure handicappers but the key questions are:

1. What do you feels more comfortable with?
2. Percentage wise are you likely to be closer to the pin by using a chipper rather than a 7/8 iron. if the answer is yes end of story.

Thanks for all your responces, read this forum quite a bit over the past 6 months since I've taken to the game and is certainly helping. In responce to comments

Aztecs27- "congrats on dropping 15 shots from your PB" Thanks I'm sure it will go back up next round but after 6 months of hacking around the lessons I've been having are finally starting to click!

Barcardibatman- "I didnt think the 2 faced clubs were allowed anymore?" Is this true? if so I better give it up now as I hope to be competition playing one day.

Swinger- "migs - gism??" No joke, nicknamed miguel at school and then shortened!

3offtheTee- "What do you feels more comfortable with?" At the moment its the chipper, I was previously using my PW but occasionally caught it on the edge and there's nothing more frustrating to see it ping of the otherside of the green to be further away that you started. My gut feeling is its a bit of a cheats way out given the abuse I got this weekend, although that may be bacause I was knocking it to within a couple of feet to the pin each time!! Will have a practice with a lower iron to see what I feel but I guess its each to their own on things like this??!!

i might be totally wrong if this (below) doesnt apply

was out the game for a while

d. Striking Faces
The clubhead must have only one striking face, except that a putter may have two such faces if their characteristics are the same, and they are opposite each other.

Had one when I firsted started out - Tad Moore Hotblade.

My pro pointed out it was an 8 iron in disguise, and I had 6 similar clubs (inc hybrid) that could do the same thing, dropped it in faovur of a GW (4 wedges a whole different debate!_

Do what works for you - but remember its costing you a club

I've never used one, I don't see what they enable you to do that you couldn't do, and probably better, with another club.

I've tried to simplify the whole chipping thing so that my course management around the greens is better. If I am just off the green in the fluffy stuff then it's the 7 iron used exactly like a putter. Slightly further out it's 52 deg or PW, or bump and run with the 7 iron again.

Only when having to get up over a bunker and stop quick does the 60 deg make an appearance.

I practice these shots a lot at the range, usually playing 3 different shots with 3 different clubs to 3 different targets - think that makes sense? I know what I mean anyway :D

I used to use mine all the time but only managed 6 rounds a year and chipping was really bad, friends ribbed me but knew it was deadly, I could easily knock it very close. After deciding to play regulary and joined my club I've dropped it a learnt to use my 7i which is becoming just as accurate! But I have no problems with anyone using one but for me was a club taking up space in my bag and clattering my putter!

I think its a waste of a club.
If you have a chipper, you have to drop another club to compensate.
In my bag I'd have to drop one of my wedges - but I'm better off using the wedges as I can hit one from more places than I could hit a chipper from.

As Tiger said, learn to use the 7/8or9 iron instead. Does the same job.

Taking on the advice from above and having bought a V-easy which turned up yesterday I gave it a go last night with a 7 Iron and think with a bit of prcatice the chipper will soon be put back in the garage!

Chippers are properly gay, no other words for them!

Every single one of them should be collected and melted down, the designers of these clubs then rounded up and shot at dawn, and anybody who uses one, regardless of how easy it is or how it improves their game, should be made to take each shot they do with said chipper with their pants round their ankles.

Horrible bloody "clubs" they are that should never have been allowed on sale

I used one up until recently when I went for a putting lesson, we moved onto chipping quite quickly and was shown how to chip properly with my 9i. Therefore the chipper has been removed and left space for another (better) club.

Much better if you can chip with a normal iron rather than a chipper.
