A friend of mine asked if I could help him because he was shanking so bad, I’m no expert but said I would look on u-tube for tips ( he’s old and doesn’t do internet? ). Anyway I found the most simplest tip I could find and we were played next day.

The tip was to set up as normal swing and miss the ball on the inside, 2 swings like this and on the third swing hit the ball, I was amazed immediately it worked he never had another shank all round.

Not saying this will work for the op but might be worth a try.

Been struggling for 5 yrs, some reasonable stuff but mainly creeping up in the handicap. I love the game, if I cannot hit balls there is no point. But I have finally accepted having a family and a job means good golf and practice are compromised.

I sympathise with anyone that has had them. I have had a bout recently when working on my pitching of all things so not even full shots to the point where I was standing over the ball on the practice ground, so with no repercussions as you would have on the course and literally didn't know what to do to get the ball going forward. Completely scared me and sucked all confidence and so it was no surprise the golfing gods decreed that in the next round I'd come up short on a lot of holes and have a fiddly pitch in. It was literally a case of swing and hope and no thought on distance control, just hit the green somewhere. I am still getting them in practice occasionally which has hampered the work I want to do and still affects confidence when playing but more are going forward so just trying to work through it.

If your not enjoying it give it up, I would. However before that I would look at what is the 'enjoying it' and reassess.

I moved on from scoring many years ago as a main focus, I now play golf for enjoyment and fun, go for silly shots some times, sometimes just slashing away at the ball with no focus. And I really like paying different golf course even if my golf is pants. Tend to mix it up, so I do not become bored of one aspect.

Other people find other focuses, like old clubs ;)

 Too true!

I'd got down to 8 and then developed an exceptional shank on my mid to long irons, soul destroying. I followed this up with chipping yips and my handicap is now settling around 14, still hopeful of getting back down a few shots but I won't lose any sleep if I don't.

The old clubs have given me another aspect of golf to enjoy rather than just the monotony/tyranny of scores and handicap.

The shanks/sockets

When I was younger I played all shots left to right but when I got in to my 50s I realised I was starting to loose to much distance so I decided to change to hitting it right to left. I had never shanked a ball in 25+ years of playing until I took that decision.

I've been suffering with the Shanks - not every shot but enough to spoil the round. I decided in investing in some lessons and this is excatly the tip that the Pro gave me. If I remember to do this properly I find I'm not only not shanking but hitting much more solid shots. I've not fully cleared of them but much reduced and when I do it's inevitably under pressure when I fail to stick to this routine.

Reading this thread it's also interesting to see how many low handicap golfers are afflicted with the shanks. I've heard that a shank is not far off a perfect shot but it's hard to believe

I should have used my own tip today first iron shot 100 yard p/w ...shank, horrible shot and not a good start to a round
