Some of the advice and offers etc., on here are lovely. I didn't set out to get them. I posted it in anger and I suppose to see if anyone could tell me that they've been there and came out of it. .

Yes mate, 12 months ago. I was playing good golf and then for 3 months I reckon I lost over 100 balls on the course, I had to walk off twice during rounds or I would have killed a pp or the nearest living thing and I spent £100s on lessons and time down the range to get out of the Sherman slump!

Glad to report I'm pretty much out if it BUT it was bloody awful while it lasted and I have every sympathy for you.

I get the odd one, usually when playing a short iron half shot. I find its because I set up with my weight on my heels. As I swing I rock forward and hit it with the hosel.

An old pro suggest going onto the practie ground and playing with a golf ball under each heel to promote the feel of getting your weight onto the balls of your feet. Might not work for you but, equally, it might...

I gave up for years when I got the chipping shanks. Nothing to do with technique, just a spasm on the down swing.

Have then the odd time with full shots, but that is a technical problem, and after a lesson I now know what causes them. Probably a fancy name for it, but basically my hips thrust towards the ball, rather than turning. Good Pro should sort OP out.

Your problem is mental now you are mentally scarred. I haven't read the full thread but haven't seen any mention of weight? Where do you feel your balance point in your feet? Usually shankers have weight back in their heels causing them to move forward in the downswing and presenting hose to the ball. If I was you I'd seriously be working on balance and setup. Also if you hit balls with a very closed stance as though your trying to swing way out right it should help your path. Also if clubface is closed is it because of a strong grip or manipulation that is causing the face to be closed. Also if you hit balls that are teed up, try and swing out to the right. Do this to build your confidence back up. Don't quit, it's obviously very frustrating for you but are you really goina let a bad ruin such a great passtime. Even change the pro you are seeing and book a block of lessons, might cost a bit but at least it will keep you on the right track

Balance, width of stance, strong right hand grip and taking it back way inside was my faults on Sat. After they were highlighted the shank disappeared.

Were you teaching me? 😁

Must be something about 8 handicap. Had them for 6/7 months a couple of years ago, and almost gave the game up. My iron striking has never been the same since, as lost all confidence with it.

I think in one of my lessons, the pro had me hitting shots off an upslope, which helped. Perseverance eventually paid off though. Iron striking still not amazing...but I don't live with quite so much fear these days (that's cursed it...)

I seriously think I am ready to stop playing. I am getting no enjoyment from the game due to my constant shanking. I get them so regularly and it seems I have them more than I don't.
The rest of the time I am playing off a handicap of 8 and keep getting told I will come down further.

It's not the odd bout of them, it's been on and off for 5 years and for at least 3 months at a time when they're in. It's at a stage now where I just can't take anymore as they dominate me when I'm stood over the ball.

Unless you've gone through it I don't think you can understand how annoying it is. I'm absolutely gutted and surprised that golf can make you feel like this.

I've had lessons that seem to give it a temporary fix and I do actually put a lot of time into my practice and am a model student. I just now don't think I'm good enough not to hit them regularly.

Hey buddy, I just saw this video and thought of you.
Maybe you might be able to find a coach with this equipment to help you?

Good luck!

This sums up shanking so much for me...obviously it's a swing fault but for me it's the result of a mental aspect that causes me to do the fault when they begin. pretty much chipping yips.

Yet on grass with a target on front of me it doesn't happen- only off mats on a range for some strange reason

I suffer with them occasionally but only on the Range and in the Nets which I now avoid.
Horrible feeling and unbelievably frustrating... Like playing Darts and constantly
bouncing off the wire with every throw.

Probably not good practice but for a quick fix I started setting the club with the Hosel in line with the ball.

Yeah I went through a stage of them - its a mental block - you think don't shank but the mind is already telling you to do - I recommend you read Dr Bob Rotella's books! Put some perspective into the game of golf. Do you want to compete or just have fun? does your handicap truly matter?

End of day - go back to when you first picked up a club and first got into the sport. Relax, clear you mind and get on with it.
