This suggests you believe there is an advantage, albeit a small one.

Now you are saying there is no advantage in going first but you actually have one in going second.
The example you gave does not ring true in my eyes; you don't know if your FC flushed it, gripped down or even hits the ball the same distance as you so knowing they came up short with a 5 doesn't mean you should hit 4.

Playing second to an FC that consistently smashed it down the middle of the fairway or stiffs it on the green would not be an easy act to follow. This would definitely have an impact on your game.

so you think there is an advantage to go first in a stroke play comp, why?

Feel free to read the last sentence I wrote in my previous reply.

But you're not playing against him - you are playing against the course. If you are thinking about him then you aren't going to do well anyway

Not really. You are playing against the rest of the field. You can beat the field. You can't beat the course.
Also - this is not how human nature works. You react to what is in front of you. If your FC drains a 30 foot putt, your 6 footer is going to look that little bit longer. Whether this is match play or stroke play, this will always affect people.

I look forward to you telling me that this is not true for you.

I,play the course - that's who I'm trying to beat every time I play stroke play - if I beat the course then the comp score will take care of itself - what my FC does makes no odds to me

There's no reason why you can't play ready golf, AND keep the correct order of honour on the tee.

If it's my honour - I'm there!

Why tho ?

the guys i play with most weekends would be considerably shorter off the tee than i would be so we often play out of turn , never an issue ,
few times on par 5's the guy slightly closest to the green might be laying up, the guy further back might want to go for it , would ye wait or just go ahead and let them play and lay up ?

there is no black and white answer to this , common sense should be a decider.. if there is such thing as common sense

On the greens there can be occasions to play out of turn but generally its play in turn on the green ..

In theory, ready golf is a good idea.
In practice it can get out of hand - potentially, all 4 players could be playing at the same time.
Even 2 people playing at the same time can get messy......

From recent experience, the best way to speed up golf is to walk a bit faster between shots - seen way too many people who look like they're just out for a Sunday afternoon stroll...

I agree mate but if you have a long hitter on the tee and a couple of not so long hitters , it makes sense to play out of turn , honour doesnt matter a jot to me , my comment is if your ready and want to play , play ..

It just needs a bit of talk to ensure people don't play at the same time - common sense again. Play it every week and have not had any issues yet

Our 3 ball will often play ready golf. We'll invite each other onto the tee if we're not quite ready to play ourselves, the same on the fairway. I'll often play my fairway shot before helping a FC to find their ball even if I am closer to the hole, and I will encourage my FC's to do the same. It only takes a bit of common sense and this can work a treat. Obviously, this is only for strokeplay, matchplay you have to keep in strict order.

anyone notice a trend ?

I'm of the opinion that if you're ready to go, whack away! At the end of the day, what real difference is it gonna make to your game?

If it's my honour - I'm there!

I phrased that badly- I didn't mean that I insist on taking the honour if it's my turn.
What I tend to find is that person whose honour it is, is not ready to take their shot, so I will step in and play ready golf.

However if it's my honour (and fairway is clear) there is rarely any need to someone to step in ahead of me- I am a firm believer in someone hitting before the scores are filled in. If I am playing with shorter hitters (if such people exist!), i will encourage them to play if I can't
