After reading the latest mag I came across the article on ready golf

Now this is one thing I am in favour of massively - believe it could help cut down one the biggest negatives in oir game - slow play

Get the game moving - if you are ready to play your shot and it is safe to do so then take your shot - even on the tee , I'm not bothered about having the honour etc so if someone is ready when I do then away you go.

So what do people think - should we adopt this method more frequently especially during a comp ?

Not sure about in competition play but DEFINITELY in social play. I played an evening round a couple of weeks ago with Merv79 and another friend, we got round North Hants in 2hr50 just purely by playing 'ready' golf.

I think 'ready golf' has a definite place on the course and will often play this when out with mates.
Likewise, I am not precious about having the honour either.

During a competition, no. I don't think ready golf should be used. Stick with tradition.

Whilst i'm a big advocate of being ready to take your shot straight after the previous player has, the traditionalist in me likes the honour system on the tee box. I think if more players got to their balls and were prepping their shots (without distracting others) while a playing partner was playing theirs then things would move fast enough, but generally players haven't even begun their pre shot routine with, yardages, club selection etc until its officially their turn to hit. And dont get me started with people who do have the honour but instead of hitting, start filing in the scorecard, getting drinks out, quick chat about a missed putt..... Just hit the ball!

my mates reg play like this, for instance on sat in the medal we just went if you were ready... 3 hour round in a comp with the 3 ball behind us losing at least 3 holes

I'm slightly conflicted. While I completely agree with the ready golf mind set in play I still think the honour should be maintained. That said if everyone agreed to scrap it I'd live, but it's nice to be first on the tee box after a putting in a good hole.

I played with a guy recently who wouldn't play out of turn. It was a mental thing with him, he reckoned any time he played out of turn it was a disaster so wouldn't play or putt if you were a fraction further than him. It did slow down play but I wasn't about to rush the guy into messing up so I put up with it without comment. The other guy I played with was like me and played when ready. I can imagine if 4 guys are playing like this first guy it would cost serious time over a round.

Always play ready golf when playing socially with friends. Doesn't bother me honour of the tee, actually if I have had a good hole I do better not having the honour. Haven't played many competitions so can't really comment on that. think anything that quickens up the pace of play can only be good.

I think a two man tee off would beneficial.

Player 2 has to hit his tee shot while player 1's is still in the air, makes the game much quicker.

Assuming comp format isn't impacted then Ready Golf all the way for comp & social games, no honour on the tee and belt it on the fairway when its safe and if another ball isn't in flight

Ready golf on the green too for the most part (by all means have a default order of putting for all players being ready but if you're not ready then I'll have a putt please)

I don't play golf because its a game with traditions. I play because its its the most beautiful, difficult, rewarding & frustrating game on the planet

plus obligatory 4mph walking to your ball or a 2 stroke penalty. The person who reaches their ball first qualifies for a mulligan.

/I can see a whole new era opening up...speed golf with M-M-M-M Multiballll

2hr rounds and everyone lean as a butchers pencil

Where practical & sensible I agree with it. As long as there is no rushing, 2 people aren't playing at the same time and no pressure is put on people to play if they aren't comfortable to do so.

For example, I often play with shorter hitters than myself. So if the group in front are out of range for them, I see no reason why they shouldn't tee off first. But say on a par 3, if no worthwhile advantage is gained in terms of time, you may as well go off in the normal order of things. It's not as if it takes too long for the player with the honour to sort him/herself out and play away, even if someone else has already chosen their club and wants to get on the tee a split second earlier than their PP/FC.

A few weeks ago in a comp we weren't playing ready golf and the chap whose shot it was, was the other side of the fairway. My mate decided that he would play out of turn. At the same time I was about 5 yards behind him practicing my swing and getting myself prepared not knowing that he was doing this. I would've been next and the guy playing out of turn would've been last to play. He took his actual swing whilst I was making a noise behind him and this put him off. This really could only be averted by playing in order or by everyone stating aloud that we would play ready golf.

I've done that (just the once) - my mate was teeing off on the extreme right of the tee box and I teed up on the extreme left - stated backswing at same time as he started downswing - he jumped about a foot in the air when he heard my club make impact with the ball. We both hit the fairway.

I'm all for ready golf except in matchplay.

I dont see that it would really make much of a difference to speed of play. Slow golfers will always be slow.

True but if you have 3 others in the group playing quickly then the group as a whole will get round quicker.
