I am all for it, especially off the tee. Some people are happy to walk off the green, pick a tee out of their pocket, tee it up and hit it. Others like mark their card first, check GPS, find a tee in their bag etc so let those who are happy to tee off quickly get it done whilst those who do not wait. Equally, the shorter hitters should look to tee off once the group ahead are out of their range rather than wait for them to clear the range of the longer hitter who may have the honour.

It may be seen as poor etiquette (and I am happy to be shot down on this) but if a ball is lost and you are not calling a group through (which is one of my pet hates as you should call through if the position of the ball is not immediately obvious rather than after 5 minutes of hunting) then 3 people should hunt whilst the other plays his shot with that person joining in the hunt after his shot whilst another leaves to play their ball. That way if the ball is found, there is only one shot left to play rather than a further hold up as all 4 people have to play once the ball is found.

Just to add more fuel to the fire, I would also make it compulsory that any putt inside of a certain distance must be holed rather than marked. Fed up with seeing people mark tap in putts that could be finished off in a few seconds.

A few weeks ago in a comp we weren't playing ready golf and the chap whose shot it was, was the other side of the fairway. My mate decided that he would play out of turn. At the same time I was about 5 yards behind him practicing my swing and getting myself prepared not knowing that he was doing this. I would've been next and the guy playing out of turn would've been last to play. He took his actual swing whilst I was making a noise behind him and this put him off. This really could only be averted by playing in order or by everyone stating aloud that we would play ready golf.

On your last point this is something I'd cover on 1st tee box

I agree with most of what you say, but sometimes where to stand can be an issue.

I'm all for it except that in some circumstances I might actually like to wait and see what happens with the player whose turn it should be; usually on a putting green to get an idea of speed/break on similar putts. So, yes, but with some flexibility.

Exactly... There are plenty of times when I would like to see the result of someones shot before mine. I would prefer to keep as is and just be ready to play when its your go!

I suppose that there could be some benefit to watching someone else's shot in whatever format but, in many instances, golf needs to be sped up and so it cannot be had both ways. The benefits of rounds being played at a more respectable rate to me far outweigh the benefits of perhaps gaining a small advantage by seeing someone else hit their ball first. If there is no congestion on your course and everyone is getting round in a time that they see as acceptable then great but for those courses suffering 5 hour plus rounds, ready golf has to help.

There's no reason why you can't play ready golf, AND keep the correct order of honour on the tee.

If it's my honour - I'm there!

Damn right especially if some of the spotty teenagers have put thier name down with mine on the start sheet!

I had originally thought "ready golf" meant being ready to play when it's your turn.

not much of an advantage in strokeplay comp

This suggests you believe there is an advantage, albeit a small one.

no as i don't think there is any advantage, not to go first anyway. Maybe some going 2nd so you can judge your shot... such as,you know he's hit five iron and been short, so you take a 4.

Now you are saying there is no advantage in going first but you actually have one in going second.
The example you gave does not ring true in my eyes; you don't know if your FC flushed it, gripped down or even hits the ball the same distance as you so knowing they came up short with a 5 doesn't mean you should hit 4.

Playing second to an FC that consistently smashed it down the middle of the fairway or stiffs it on the green would not be an easy act to follow. This would definitely have an impact on your game.

so you think there is an advantage to go first in a stroke play comp, why?
