Random Irritations

My nationality is English, but many frown when I say that.
Who on earth frowns at that?
I would and have described myself as English and have never had anyone ever frown at it.
I also describe myself as British and European, dependent on context, which, as so often, is all.

Some people I know who regard themselves, and also regard me, as British, which is absolutely correct, obviously.
But me claiming to be English first and British second is regarded by some as me just being very nationalistic!

For me and maybe the official line is that Scottish, English etc are not nationalities. If you are born in these parts your official nationality is British.
But, absolutely fine to describe yourself as English.

GB is no longer the recongnised marker for us, it's UK.
If you go on an international site, when it asks your country GB is gone, it's UK now.
Surely that’s not a change at all as the full correct name is The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. So in real terms UK is actually a better abbreviation to use as it comes before GB and the term United Kingdom is more w

Uk has been the sovereign political state for decades

A GB sticker is no longer valid on the back of your car when travelling in Europe. It has to be U.K. now.

Are we still GB in the Olympics though??

I describe myself as English. I would never say I was British - that just reminds me of Americans in films talking about 'Briddish' accents.

On holiday in Mexico last year, talking to Canadians and Mexicans I always said I was British, then the conversation leads on to which part of Britian etc.
On holiday in Gran Canaria recently, talking to some Dutch people, I said I was from England 🤷‍♂️🤣

I sat at a bar in Tenerife and a minute after ordering our drinks the (Spanish) manager put a Welsh flag on our table and had "Delilah" blasting over the PA.
I was well impressed! 😅

I am a British UK citizen.

Although "citizen" is questionable in that I am also a "subject" of the Crown, whether I like it or not.
I was born in England and have lived in England apart from one year in Abertawe (Swansea)

If I am asked to say whether I am English, Scottish or Welsh, I reply, "All three, because I am British."

I can not exclude one of the three, because of where my grandparents were born and lived, resulting in me having Scottish and Welsh relatives.

Although we have 4 saint's days, what we are lacking is a UK National Day Of Unity.
USA and France have one and I would find a lot to celebrate if we had one.

Scottish and English are nationalities, as is Welsh.
I was born in England and have lived here all my life, I most definitely am English.
