Random Irritations

Please remember, this is my irritation and I am entitled to it. Just because you (or others) aren’t bothered by it doesn’t change my irritation 😜
Oh I’m not trying to change it was just a general question as in do people actually celebrate it, as I don’t think I know a single person that does.

I only added the I care about others to show I’m equal opportunities not bothered about Patriotic days 😂

Out of interest does anyone actually care about or celebrate St George’s day!

I also have no in other nations Patron Saint days 🤷🏼

People try and make it like St Patrick’s day and the likes of Yaxely Lennon leap on it to carry on their agendas

St George was born in Turkey and don’t think he ever set foot in England

Where as William Shakespeare- that’s en Englishman to be proud off

I’m not questioning it for people politics, I was just wondering if people celebrate our national Saints day and I’m sure those that do in majority do so out of pride and not out of right wing racist nationalism. So I’m not going to be drawn into that.

Many a great Englishman/woman weren’t born here, Freddie Mercury, Vivian Leigh, Sir Mo Farah. Or to use your example of literary greats George Orwell & Rudyard Kipling. So just because St George Wasn’t English doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be proud of him after all a Christian soldier protesting against the persecution of Christian’s and advocating charity through giving to the poor are pretty praise worthy actions imo. Regardless of whether he set foot here or not, I’m pretty sure he didn’t slay an actual dragon but Christian beliefs is what England was formed on so it’s a logical choice of Patron Saint.

He (apparently) was a fraud who didn’t write half of what he claimed - if some stories are to be believed.

There are always stories and conspiracy theories

Bit like the amount of people who are suddenly 1/100000000000th Irish to excuse their drunken Paddy’s day behaviour 🤷🏼
You mean St Patrick who was born in Wales😂😂

At least our Edmund was a King who fought immigrants (Vikings) trying to take our Country! And! His banner was a white dragon.😱

Must give the patriots a ring today and cancel the celebrations until november!😬

Just found this…

The man was born on Christmas Day as well👍🏻

3 cheers for Edmund.

Probably more true to say they put Christmas Day on his birthday 😂

I think a lot of people feel they can’t celebrate in case they get thought of as a racist, which is a real shame.
The same as the association with the Union Jack/St George’s cross.
Bigots and idiots have unfortunately adopted this as their sign/emblem and use it to hide behind.
Much the same way hooligans hide behind football as an excuse to have a punch up.
Weirdly enough I have had a couple of people I know that are not English message me this morning wishing me a happy St George day.

Think you’ve nailed it with that analogy. I don’t celebrate it as I don’t feel particularly patriotic like that but I do think people should be able to guilt free from accusations thrown at them due to how the far right have weaponised it.

@Neilds is absolutely right to feel irritated but we can also comment about the concept of a saints day.

We are not a catholic country so a saint, really? The guy wasn't English, never came to England. Why am I celebrating him? I don't feel any link or pride in St George, he is a meaningless figure.

We need a rebrand and instead of a saints day, have a national day. Not after a person, there is always a controversy out there regarding an individual. Somehow we need to create a National day, if people feel the need, and celebrate that. Alternatively, just forget it, ignore it. I can't say I miss feeling anything on any of these saints days.

I don’t feel anything today.
which I think it’s a shame we don’t have a day like the paddy’s do.
They all seem to take great pride in it and it’s celebrated throughout the world which is brilliant.
I admit to being jealous we don’t have a day like that.
Maybe we should have Queen Elizabeth ll day instead?

The catholic angle doesn’t really make a difference, Saints still exist and are venerated in the Anglican Church so as part of reformation St George is still very much of Christian value to many on many sides of the denominations. So that point is a little irrelevant in the sense that those with religious beliefs still hold it close to them. However from an atheistic point of view you’re spot on in that there’s no meaning so both things are technically true.

I don’t think we need national days or holidays personally as they’re just flag waving nonsense and faux patriotism. Just my personal opinion of course 😉

I see what you are saying, but, that’s a modern thing, if we’d of been celebrating St George’s Day for a long time and it was ingrained into our schools/culture/society/etc then the flag shaggers and “so called” patriots wouldn’t of been allowed to adopt it.
Cast your mind back it was the Union Flag that was the symbol of skinheads and their ilk, it was rarely St George’s Cross, even looking back at England Football games it was the Union Flag everywhere😵‍💫

People are rightly allowed to be proud of were they come from and to celebrate how they wish.

For me, people tried to replicate St Patrick’s Day for the drink and partying and when that failed, the idiots stepped in.

Same for Remembrance Day for me, poppies everywhere and people using them as political symbols.

Everyday is Remembrance Day to some.
