Random Irritations

people unable to read road signs. the two adjacent swing bridges across the Caledonian canal are now back opening every 5 mins to boats. there is a detour sign on all the roads running up to the bridges , but people keep ignoring them. twice today i got stack at the roundabouts before because people blocked them queuing up at closed bridges when there was an open bridge just yards away.

When you decide to do a 20 minute job before going out and are still doing it 2 hours later.

The only getting out became getting to Screwfix to buy new parts because the ones I had already bought as replacements were too short.

Good old Royal Mail.

A birthday card arrived today a few of days late for my wife’s birthday, which was last week. Scrawled across the front of the envelope was “Not known at this address in (name of town)”. Turns out it had been delivered to the same street address as ours, but in a different town and postcode area entirely.

The question is how? Because on the envelope, printed in clear block capitals, was our correct full postal address and postcode. How can a sorting office, and then a postman/woman, not notice the mistake?

Royal Mail has gone to the dogs. Lucky to get one delivery every few weeks these days! Shocking service.

Arrived in Amsterdam today. Schiphol was a mess at customs. Loads of sexy new machines, they simply didn't work as they should. Initially it looked good. Lots of them, no queue. Scanned passport, took picture, didn't ask for fingerprints and sent me to the giant queue. My wife did get to scan her fingerprints, got sent to no queue, automatic machines as per the UK.

Sadly for her, that then didn't work and she got sent to the back of my huge queue. 1hr 10 into the queue a helpful customs man saw my passport, 'ah, you are British, let's try this machine '. I explained what had happened previously and he came with me. We went through the process again, I got past the fingerprint stage but it still didn't process me. However, he took me to the front of the main queue, I saw the passport person, did my fingerprints again and in theory....... I'm now in the system.

My wife didn't get so lucky, we were separated earlier on. It ultimately took her 1hr 40 to get through 😳.

It's a real mess. If the machines start working properly then it should start to be okay. There are lots of them, it's actually quite quick to do. If they don't work........🤬😱.

I suspect we may have to arrive at the airport 3hrs or so early on Sunday, just to make sure we get through in time.

My Sister in Law got her Birthday card sent from us last Tuesday for her birthday on Friday today 🤷 along with 22 other items in the post ,their first post for 10 days 😱

Is it an issue with Royal Mail in certain parts of the Country?

Can’t remember having a problem either sending or receiving mail here in the North East.🤷‍♂️

Sister in Law is in Devon and our local town Newport in Shropshire there have been moans on SM about not receiving mail where for us just over the border in Staffordshire and rural have had no problems ,so pretty random

I can just about live with late deliveries. I understand that many regions are prioritising parcels over letters. We, too, seem to receive enveloped mail pretty infrequently.

But the delivery of a clear and correctly addressed envelope to somewhere else entirely, merely because it has the same house number and street name, is another level. Even in the event it slipped through the sorting office, surely to goodness a human being wearing a RM uniform and with the envelope in their hand must notice it’s going to the wrong location before putting it through a letterbox. That, to me, smacks of someone who can’t be arsed to return it to the sorting office to get it redirected.

We’re still getting the odd Christmas card. Last year Mrs H got her birthday card from her brother in November - her birthday is mid June. My proof of life letter from DWP arrived a month after it was due to be returned.

It sounds like the Royal Mail are going down the Spanish model, i.e. a delivery when there’s a bunch of stuff to deliver.

I mentioned last week when we came back from Ibiza the day before it was officially unrolled that it was a pigs ear. Saw a lovely video clip earlier of our beloved Prime minister saying last year what a wonderful idea it is and how it will speed up arrivals and departures. 🤬

I would make it four hours. One of the main complaints was that people were checking in luggage ok and getting through. But some airports were checking passports again once you have been told what your gate number is. And in some instances your gate number is less than an hour before the flight time. That is when a lot of the problems have arose because there just has not been enough time to process everyone and flights have left without passengers.

Been thru Schipol twice in the last two weeks, latest one was 7pm last night. Sailed through both times. First time was late afternoon, around 5 pm. Maybe it’s a particular problem on a morning? Faro was like that last year, 90 minutes to get thru passport control on a Saturday morning.

It's the "taking back control of our borders "
EU passport holders will encounter none of this. This process was started long before Starmer came to power

We arrived at 6pm 🤷.

Hopefully going out is better but easyJet have messaged us advising us to get there 3 hours before rather than the usual 2. I suspect we may go slightly earlier than that. I'll be happy to sail through in 5 minutes and have longer to wait on the other side. Better than getting stressed in a queue.
