I am sure that when I passed my test, a long time ago, the phrase was that pedestrians had right of way at all times.

Now there are more statements about if passengers are waiting to cross you are to stop to let them cross.

It may well of been, but now it’s more stringent. The only problem is, as imurg sort of alluded to, some pedestrians are taking their life in their hands by following a rule that the vast majority of road users does not know exists.

I don't think it's so much the drivers knowing it exists - it's more that the pedestrians think they're untouchable because of it, and they'll not even look for cars or give any indication that they intend to cross in a second.

You would have thought that common sense would be enough for people to check a road before walking in front of something big enough to kill you.

I would rather check its safe than just leave my safety down to a stranger.

The issue is not whether they have the right, they do. It's whether they act wisely. Not much of a metal cage around a pedestrian and personally, I don't think arguing from a hospital bed whilst in traction is much of a win. Go back to the old green cross code, it will keep you safe.

The new rule has nothing to do with how the pedestrians are acting now. As with walking when on the phone, not noticing what kids/dogs are up to, there is a lack of situational awareness form an awful lot of people, pedestrians and drivers alike, nowadays.

I now ask myself how did I ever walk as it seems nowadays you must be looking at a phone to ensure your legs work and add that to finding what ever you are looking at more important than checking it’s safe to cross the road, I find as an old fart, totally bizarre.

This reminds me of something that annoys me about my wife's driving. Often if another driver does something questionable, she'll just stubbornly stick to what she was doing and when I shout "watch out!" or something similar, she'll snap back and say it was the other driver who was in the wrong. I never said it wasn't, but we can still take steps to avoid a potential accident! I sometimes think she would happily crash the car into somebody as long as it was mostly their fault. It baffles me. If someone is driving like a cock I give them all the room in the world to do so!

I guess as a driver when I’m near any sort of crossing I’ll always be aware of any pedestrians walking near by , even more so when near a school

I see it all the time , cars flying around with very little awareness and have lost count of the amount of times cars have just gone through crossings even when someone is waiting because they basically were going too fast to stop

I thought there was a change in the driving regs last year or the year before that gave pedestrians the right of way at junctions.

Having the Right of Way doesn't mean you can automatically go......
Whether it's right or wrong, stepping out into a road with the assumption that traffic will see you and give way is asking for trouble.
As a pedestrian you may be in the right but it's not going to do you much good if you're dead.....

4 months laid up. 2 years on crutches. 20 years of pain every single day, and being woken up by it every single night. Stepping out hoping a car will stop, or not even looking, is just plain stupid.

I often think about this when I'm out, and then remember plenty of people in the graveyard had right of way too.

The problem is as I think imurg mentioned some time ago, the DVSA in the infinite wisdom decided to very very minimally advertise this rule change. Therefore the only people who really know it are those who have had lessons since Jan 2022. So fundamentally you have people driving to 2 sets of rules. I remember when the green cross code came out with Tufty. Every kids program had averts, every comic, magazine and schools did something similar to cycling proficiency on the code. I think we, as a species, need to consider the difference between a right to do something and the sensibility of doing it.

I have the right to drink bleach, for example.

Think there's a misnomer in the phrase 'right of way'. Curent guidelines don't rely on that phrase. Pedestrians (generally) have 'priority' - which means they should be favoured. But that doesn't mean they can just wander about at will. Can't just step out in front of a vehicle and claim ' it was their fault'. Drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders etc all still have to pay attention to what's going on around them.

Come drive around Chelsea if you want to see pedestrians walking where they want.
They just walk straight out across the road, regardless of whats coming. You see this every hour of every day.
Along with them and the 2 wheel terrorists on pedal or ebike, driving around there is an absolute nightmare and you needs eyes in the back of your eyes.
