Random Irritations

More than one explanation for that though.
Pre-Covid, if I had a streaming nose or a hacking cough I would still spend 3.5 hours of my day commuting into London to work for 8 hours and spread my viruses far and wide, as required by my employer.
Post-COVID, such behaviour is rightly seen by the general commuting and working population as massively antisocial. For some jobs, but obviously not all, this can be solved with a simple message to your line-manager: “Full of cold. May I wfh today?”
Even for the malingerers, half a day’s work done at home is better than a full day off sick, isn’t it?

Ironically, the only time my line manager didn’t tell me to wfh while ill was after I had tested positive for COVID because the policy had just changed to say that self-isolation was no longer necessary and they were worried about breaking the rules.
Yeah, it's funny how things have turned around. Twenty years ago you'd get pelters off people for having a day off with a cold. Nowadays you get pelters for going in with one! They'd much rather you were working from home and keeping your germs to yourself.

Plenty of other illnesses too that used to require a day off but don't when you can work from home - having the two-bob bits for example!

Re my bold
Yeah but Very dependant of course

If you're (they are) too ill to work then you're too ill to work
I'm not paying a full days salary for half a days work
I pay an attendance bonus every month for no sick days taken, I want everyone to earn this but not by spurious wfh days when they claim they're not well enough to come to office but then say they can easily wfh
Most contracted UK employees get paid when off sick and just get a notional tick in an “Absences” column.
I guess it depends if management feel they’d benefit most from you getting on with your work at home or ticking the box and paying you to watch TV.

Actors and the Oscars. When did just being nominated become a “win”. It’s like coming 8th in an Olympic final, but not as good. A lot of actors are just full of their own self importance. It’s not real, you’re just pretending to be someone else.

TV cameras watching presenters/ pundits watching the action. The first time it was fun, jumping when they've scored, won a medal etc. Now it feels staged instead of being done unseen.

Grinch moment over 😄

The fact that actors need so many award ceremonies shows just how up themselves they are. Always need people telling them how wonderful they are when all they are doing is playing make believe - something most kids can do aged 3!

A bit diff here, no obligation to pay sick pay in first 12 months (unless they do perfect attendance for first 6 months, in which case it can start early)

My recollection of working in the States (I was a uk employee) was that the local staff had to ‘earn their sick days’, more service meant you could be paid for me.
Pathetic holiday allowance too.

We moved a few years ago to unlimited holiday.
It was explained to the staff it was a benefit that could be taken away if we felt people were abusing it.
It works well for us and so far no one has really abused it.
We only bring it in after the first year though and it is optional

Yeah every country will have variations on sick/ holiday leave etc
i.e we’ve 15 public holidays a year, and Sundays are still double-time

Is it not a status thing though? ie, the person finishing 8th in the Olympics didn’t win, but it’s still a heck of an achievment to reach that level.

As an Actor and having “Nominated for an Oscar” on their CV can open many doors to parts they may not of been considered for.🤷‍♂️

Who’s best is subjective just like ice dancing or floor exercises in athletics. There’s been plenty of winner’s films I thought were awful, or I’ve not even bothered to watch if it’s been a genre that doesn’t appeal. I’d hazard a guess I might like a lead actor’s Oscar win film occasionally.

The Oscar’s aren’t really something that pings on my radar. It’s a jolly for the industry, and I appreciate it means something for others, and carries weight within the industry.

The Oscar's are often a good guide to films I should avoid. Misery and suffering, Oscar's love them. How many comedies or comedy performances have won awards?

The industry loves them, the rest of us, not so much.

Just sat through a Teams meeting where I was trying to concentrate on what he was saying, but I had no idea why I'd been invited to the meeting, or why he was telling me any of the things he was saying. And he sort of dived straight in as if everyone knew why we were there. I hope it wasn't important because I have no clue what that was about.
