Random Irritations

My daughter’s school has massively irritated me!

Both myself and her mum received an email just this evening. Congrats Miss M has been awarded a spot on our cultural trip to New York in October 2026, please pay the deposit of £1100 by 20th Jan and remaining balance of a further £1000 by 20th Feb, please see enclosed invoice and use Parent Pay app to transfer funds.

Neither of us had a clue about this trip, daughter wasn’t advised of it until today at school, but in the time she finished school and expressed an interest without being advised of costs, seeking our permission or timescales the school have sent us an invoice and added the outstanding balance to the app!!

We’ve just had to have a FaceTime call altogether to explain it’s not happening! I can afford my half but her mum can’t which is fair enough. Our daughter is a little upset but understands, but the way the schools gone about it has just bloody annoyed me!
It’s hard but find a way to send the poor kid. The experience and memories are worth making it happen.

That's easy to say and completely overlooks the disgraceful situation in which the school has placed the parents, and the child.
That sort of issue should be dealt with confidentially with parents. As it is they've placed the parents and child in an embarrassing and distressing position.
I'd be bluddy livid and would be looking for a meeting, which it looks like LMS is not in a position to do.

Nope a normal state high school !! Has massively wound me up & understandably her mum is upset as we’ve had to say no to her as she can’t afford it

It’s the fact it was all done without seeking permission or sending out any prior communication to at least discuss the options.
Check the bottom of her bag, the note will be in there - along with loads of others 😂

Haven’t got kids but MrsA is a secondary school teacher. This has done our heads in for years.
Some teacher dreams up a plan that it’s essential for A-Level students to spend 2 weeks at NASA or Hollywood, knowing they’ll get it cheap or free, while normal parents have to decide whether to sacrifice the annual holiday for the entire family.
It’s not right.

There were foreign trip options at my kids school. All were advised of well in advance, allowing parents to budget or kids to fundraise for them. There was never pressure applied.

If that isn't replicated, a school needs to look again at how they act.

My daughter’s secondary school offered the kids a trip to Vietnam. £4k. Fortunately she wasn’t interested but I know it caused all sorts of arguments elsewhere.

And then of course there was the annual ski trip…….

Huge queues and travel chaos in the Alps over the last couple of days. But it’s only us that can’t cope with adverse weather conditions apparently.

What I actually said, as you well know, was that we struggle in the UK to cope with weather which is “(not so) adverse”. They were my exact words.

How about no! I absolutely appreciate the experience it may be. But I can’t and won’t force her mum to come up with £1000 out of thin air while she has to run a home herself and doesn’t have the spare funds. Even if I paid the first instalment outright for her it puts even more pressure on her to find what she doesn’t have and we might not be together anymore but I still care that she is able to live a happy stress free life for the kids.

We alternate which year we take them away on holiday, this is her year and she already forked out a fair wedge to take them to Turkey which during school holiday is basically double what she could get for any other time so kids aren’t missing experiences.

I wish that was the case but this daughter can’t keep secrets and forgets nothing she’s always the first to ask for something so I’m inclined to believe her 😂

Exactly this I’m currently away with absolutely no chance of having recourse with the school apart from email which they tend to ignore which makes it worse as it’s her mum will have to deal with the fall out completely. Had an hour on FaceTime last night with her and our daughter genuinely felt sorry for both of them.

This is the other thing it’s not just one foreign trip they put on loads each year and expect parents just to find the money or in the schools words “child misses valuable education experiences “. In year 8 they do a Paris trips which are £1000 For a 4 day excursion which we she went on last June so if she went on this one in just over 12months it would be over £3k for a 14 year old girl to go on 2 school trips !

Can I ask if this is a private or state school?

Either way there communication is disgraceful and seriously needs looking at.

They must realise the pressure this is putting some parents under as well as the kids to keep up with their peers.

To ask parents to find £1000 just after Xmas is madness.

Also what happened to a trip to the local Zoo as a school trip?

I think one year we were taken to a factory and showed where they thought 99% would end up working.

We had a trip to Grimsby Docks and Cleethorpes when I was at junior school. We stopped at the newly opened Humber Bridge, went swimming, ice skating, round the fish place at the docks and then time in the theme park at Cleethorpes - and still made it back to the school in Barnsley for usual home time. Never worked out how we fitted it all in. And we didn't have any additional teachers or adults to supervise us :ROFLMAO:

State school none of that expensive private stuff for my kids! That ring said the state school clearly is bloody expensive now 😂

They don’t seem to do normal school trips anymore at our kids school it’s all foreign trips or overnight stays somewhere almost feels like they’re fleecing people.

I remember trips to Chatham Dockyard to learn about the building of HMS Victory and how to make rope! Fanciest trip we got was London Imperial War Museum with a Burger King that was luxury.

My one and only school trip was 5 days in London staying at an institutional style hall of residence while the students weren’t there, think it was £97 inc return bus from Scotland
Don’t remember much, must’ve been a museum visit or two in there, saw Russ Abbot tv show being filmed. Bought my first Rubik cube, wondered what on earth a ‘root beer’ is and why is it being sold in McD’s… Went home

Why not play them at their own game. Your wife and daughters go away the week the school wants to go to trump land so they can have a cheaper holiday together. The school can’t complain about them missing school time then can they.

Ps, Chatham Dockyard now has oak timbers on display that were uncovered through works there that were used as foundations for buildings, the oak timbers being from other vessels of Nelsons fleet.

Seeing as my ex would firstly have to agree to going on holiday with me to take my daughters away that week and my actual wife would also have to be on board 😂. The other issue is that trip would only cover taking 1 daughter out of school we’d still get bloody fined for taking the younger one and our son out for it 😂.

You raise a good point though because she clearly going to be missing several lessons and subject throughout the week that have no relevance to New York but that’s ok as it’s school planned but if we did it, it’s wrong and they miss education 🤔.

Re: the Nelson timbers that’s actually pretty cool might have to take a trip there. Haven’t been in a fair few years now and always enjoyed it there. Sounds like a good excuse to go along and enjoy a day out. Grab a drink down at the ship and trades and spot of lunch after. May look into that when I get back and am next down that way visiting my mum.

If I were among the staff at a school considering an educational cultural trip, I would think only of places in the UK and Ireland.
Learning about and understanding the history of the culture in the UK and Ireland seems to be vastly overlooked in England educational establishments.

Edinburgh, Aberystwyth, Dublin, Belfast, Newcastle, Bath - oh the list is almost endless and so very interesting.

Choose a place or places for a cultural educational trip and organise a family trip for less than £2,000

Embrace and absorb the local culture of language, cuisine, music and traditions of any place you choose.

My school trips always seemed to be a day out at Corfe Castle.
I only did one overseas schooll trip ................................ Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight.

Well Just to detract from the school irritation. Had to go back to the Docs as was told after 48hrs, my blood pressure is through the roof and lungs are in actual clip. I’ve been put on an inhaler 4 x a day and I’m struggling badly to even take a pee standing up without being short of breath 😒

For someone whose always fit, healthy and in the gym those symptoms couldn’t be further from normal for me, more isolation for another 48hrs unable to work, exercise and feel human isn’t helping my irritability with pretty much anything 😂

God I’m bored !
