Random Irritations

I've worked for financial institutions with a PFI arm......I liken it to leasing a new car instead of buying. You don't have the money up front to buy outright (or build in the case of PFI usually), so you get someone else to buy (build) and then pay to use it over an extended period.

Criticism of PFI is that the ongoing charges for use and maintenance can be excessive. But it built a lot of hospitals etc when governments couldn't afford to.
Why couldn't the government borrow the money to build those hospitals? They managed to borrow money to bail out banks in 2008, and support the country during Covid.

Wouldn't surprise me if the PFI investors borrowed the money to build the hospitals anyway. Seems to me that the main thing PFI achieved was to introduce yet another middle man to take a cut.

Worth looking at the previous models;should be so good deals imo 👍🏻
I'm an android user as I hate the way Apple locks you in. My current phone is a OnePlus 9 Pro which I got at a much reduced price when they upgraded the model. I think it cost me about £180. I can still make phone calls, browse the internet, take photos, play games, etc. I can't see a reason to change it.

I bought an Alcatel android for about £80 maybe 4 years ago.

It does all those bolded things for me, except I don't play games - no idea how good it is for that.

I pay £5 a month to Asda for unlimited phone calls, unlimited texts, and 3GB of data.

Paying many hundreds of pounds per year for a phone contract is just unthinkable for me.

We Buy Any Car. I have been using them to update the value of my Skoda Octavia for past cpouple of years as have been getting itchy feet for a new car. In the past 10 days the value has rocketed from £9.2k to 10.3k - so i bit the bullet - went down and they siad... 9.1! I They then upped to 9.5 and said the final offer. I went off but came vak and accepted. It was still a decent price for no hassle sell but, vased on my one previous sale 9 years ago i was expecting circa 200-300 off due to small scratches on an otherwise very good conditioned car. I asked him how many people get the figure quoted and he said none. And he said that nearer 10% off is more then norm!
Did you try Motorway? My mate got quite a bit more off them than WBAC and less trickery.

How does Apple lock you in? You can easily transfer everything from an Apple phone to an Android and vice versa.

I made the switch a few years ago. It was not the big deal I had assumed it would be.
The only downside for me is that the cheapest new iPhone is over £400 where I could get a Samsung that does everything I need a mobile phone to do for under £200.
Fortunately I replace phones when they break, not routinely every couple of years.

I had Android phones for years, usually cheaper Samsungs. Switched to an iPhone last year. It was expensive, but it is a quality piece of kit and no more expensive than high end Samsungs. Apple seem to hold their value well too.

Phones aren’t really phones anymore though are they. I won’t always have the latest I phone, but will update it every couple of years as it has pretty much replaced the laptop at home for me.

It’s the camera quality and the ability to do 90% of work related tasks, it’s not just a phone anymore.

They are not phones at all - how often do people actually use them for phone calls?

Cue long list of people saying “I do” 😂

They’re definitely not phones anymore. But like most people’s ability & needs, are the newest phones overkill?

Year on year the cameras have come out with more megapixels, but when does the number of mp’s become pointless? It’s about the type of photography people do. If it’s portrait or landscape photography, 12 to 20 megapixels is more than adequate. If the individual does a lot of cropping, enlarging or zooming, then more mp’s is better. But the 48mp is the latest iPhone is pointless unless someone is virtually doing professional level photography. 90% of people won’t be able to tell the difference between a 20mp photo compared to a 48mp photo.

As for using the phone for app related tasks, does today’s phone do something a phone from 5 years ago can’t do? Processing speed differences are negligible, and cloud storage negates the need for massive onboard memory. It’s a bit like saying the latest driver will get you 5 more yards. Will it, and what difference does 5 yards make? It’s not even 1 less iron into a green.

There’s a niche for every phone based on how involved people are, akin to some people find a notebook satisfies their needs but others, especially gamers, need the latest high speed processors, graphics cards & memory.

And then there’s personal choice. If someone wants it and can afford it, crack on.

Agreed. Motorway or Carwow all day long. At least then you have dealers bidding against one another rather than a WBAC rep knocking £100 off for virtually every stone chip.

I’d use WBAC for a quick sale of a car up to a value of around £3-4k. Any more I would not touch them with a barge pole.

The added bonus, of course, is that if you use Motorway you’ll get a lovely fella like me picking your car up 😇

14 calls this week. 12 last week. Not much really, considering we don't have a landline at home anymore.
It's very much a mini, go everywhere computer that happens to make and receive phone calls.

I had always been an Apple user, but changed to a Samsung many years ago. I had two miserable years using Android, which I absolutely loathed with a passion.

As soon as that contract was up I returned to Apple and have been with them ever since.

Tony Blair did A LOT of this with hospitals. In the end it costs the country about 3-4 times the original cost. Terrible financial waste but great for those in power to look good in the short term.
Superb bit of Blair-bashing. Well done.

Lets get a more balanced view of PFI over a longer period.

To be fair I take a lot of calls on mine, kids ring me every other day. Mrs rings me every day whilst I’m away during the week, regular calls from my team at work for stupid reasons and when I’m away regular phone calls and updates from home and checking in on my mum with my brother.

Plus we don’t have a home phone so all calls are done through our mobiles. I’m more surprised these days people actually have home phones still.

Our landline is purely in place for broadband I couldn’t even tell you what our assigned home phone line number is 🤷🏼
