Random Irritations

The current Frag Jag is a lovely car, had it 3 months, Jaguar XF Sportbrake , estate, 2L diesel, ULEZ compliant, 5 years old, done 23k miles. Excellent car

Get a message about topping up the adblue, so started looking for the relevant cap, they are blue and say adblue on it, can’t find it anywhere.

Out comes the handbook, oh it’s in the boot, lift the tailgate, it’s 1/2 way up the side on the left, behind a small blank grey panel, INSIDE THE CAR I’ve bought a 10L vat of the stuff,

It’s too high to be able pour the stuff in, so I’ve had to get a special fuel funnel and I’m going to have to decant the adblue into a jug to be able to pour it in.

Why is this even inside the car, it’s a disaster waiting to happen, whichever cretin designed this aspect of an otherwise brilliant car should have his balls boiled in syrup and served up to him when cool.

🙄🙄

@PhilTheFragger would it calm you down if I told you mine is located directly next to the fuel cap, underneath the same fuel flap, and the cap is indeed..........blue 🤭. Merc B class.

Darn those logical Germans doing logical things.

I believe it can mark quite badly. Maybe put an old towel down in the boot whilst pouring so that the carpet in the boot doesn't get trashed.

You can do one #Smugbast 😂😂😂😂😂

Wish me luck, I’ll report back later 🙄

It’s a horrific design flaw. Had the same in my old car to be done in the boot, Mrs M did it one day when I was away and accidentally spilt some. Absolutely ruins the boot as the AdBlue crystallised to form a kind of fibre glass type shell. Horrific stuff when split and whoever designed cars that way was a moron! Like you I had to make do by decanting into a jug and using a funnel which took 3x as long!

Thankfully my new car like Lord T has it inside the filler cap right next to the fuel nozzle with a blue cap 🤣

After all the hype in the EV thread I thought you’d have a Jag I-pace

Is Adblue not made from something odd like pig pee? 🤣
A common urban myth that, it’s not made from any form of animal urine, it’s a synthetic made Product of 67.5% deionized water and 32.5% high purity UREA, the UREA is an ammonia based compound hence why people started the myth it made from Pigs or other animals Pee!

But if it’s ammonia based, it’s something you don’t want to spill.

Madness to have that anywhere near the inside of your car

What exactly is Adblue for?
I had a diesel Peugeot about 30 years ago and my wife had a diesel Focus about 15 years ago. Nobody ever mentioned using it in either car.

It's a recent thing. It reduces NOx emissions from the tailpipe, turning it into nitrogen and water ( thank you Google). It goes into the exhaust system, it doesn't mix with your actual fuel.

It wasn't on older diesels, it is on newer ones, mine is 6 yrs old. It's a good thing, anything that improves air quality is a positive.

Only newer diesels need it, it’s an additive that reduces exhaust emissions, if you run out of it, your engine stops, or enters limp mode

Something that @Imurg knows about 🤭🤭

Well, job done with no dramas, took a while
Just got to do it every 7000 miles

I think I have seen adblue pumps in petrol stations, maybe they are for HGVs

Glad it isn’t just me 👍

OK thanks. I will plead guilty to being lazy and asking here - I should have Googled the stuff. Slapped wrist time.
I see that it gets consumed at a rate of about 1 litre per 25 litres of fuel. So in effect it's adding about 5p a litre to the price of diesel.

Not the same build quality, too much plastic,
I didn’t want to get of my 2011 plate XF 3L saloon, but I needed the estate to get my fishing gear in, now I be semi retired 😎

Haha, scarily identical story! I also had a 2011 3L XF saloon and loved that car. Sadly now crushed into tin cans due to a major engine fault. Had no idea what AdBlue even was until I got its greyer and more boring 2L 2017 reg replacement and started getting dashboard warnings. Exactly the same; took a while to find and thought WTF at the location - idiotic!
