Random Irritations

We always book somewhere in February for 2 weeks self catering. The family can then come up and go home as it suits them.
On the day we go we drop everyone where we are staying and while they unpack and get things sorted a couple of us go to the nearest supermarket and buy whatever we need for the 2 weeks.

I don’t expect anything to be left for us so I’m never disappointed then
I think when you are paying someone £250 per night to stay at their cottage for two weeks, to expect a few bog rolls a pint of milk and a few teabags is not unreasonable… A starter pack, if you want.

I agree it would be nice but I don’t think you can expect it unless it is advertised with it.

The last place we stayed it did have a welcome pack explain things like tv and WiFi and some fruit etc.

It was a nice touch but I didn’t expect anything.

They may have previously left loads of toilet rolls milk etc and found when people left anything unused was being taken as well so it became expensive for them

Sadly I think the welcome pack is becoming a thing of the past, we used to use a company called Lyme Bay holidays for a few years for cottages in Devon and Dorset, they was great, a little welcome card on arrival, a welcome pack of Tea and biscuits, milk, water and wine in the fridge, it was great. Unfortunately about Covid time they were bought out by a bigger company called Sykes, next time we used them there was bugger all, in fact somehow due to "Covid" we had to make our own beds, all the bed linens were just in a blue Ikea bag in the hall. Don't use them anymore.
Sykes don’t dictate whether the owners put in a welcome pack.
We rented our holiday cottage using Sykes, our welcome pack was a bottle of red, bottle of white, kettle chips, biscuits, milk, tea bags, coffee and a toy for the Dog if you had one 😀

Family eh...
My friend has an alcohol problem, and is currently on recovery. However, it has cost him a lot. His family is estranged. His wife & kids moved out. He has had a fight with his brother. Early this morning, i got a message on one of the social media platform from his brother that my friend has been taken into A&E. No other context. His parents were visiting him, but i dont have their contacts. He is atleast 2 hr drive from me. I dont have his wife and kids contacts either. His parents are also immobile and dont know much..

So this AM, sat trying to call him. As you would expect, no response on phone or whatsapp. Messaged his brother back to check on his mom's contacts, he has seen my message, but hasnt responded!!!

Finally, around noon, my friend txted back to say he is ok, but admitted to hospital for monitoring. No further detail. Send me his Mum's number. Spoke to her, she was crying. Apparently he complained of chest pain last night. Got an ambulance, they took him to hospital (she did not know which one). He had texted her in the morning that, there was block and they have done some sort of angio on him. She does not know his wife's new number. I am thinking if i should try and contact his Mrs and let her know.

Moreso, I feel like kicking his brother. We all have our differences, but surely we can set some of that aside when we have a life emergencies.

Sounds spot on (y)

Was Sykes just letting the property or where they "full management" responsible for cleaning and maintenance etc?

This may get deleted as it may be considered to be too political, but here goes.

Why does it seem that being left-leaning, or even just slightly left of centre, is increasingly viewed in a negative light?
In recent years, public discourse has become more polarised, and moderate or progressive views are often met with hostility or suspicion. For example:
  • Advocating for climate action or environmental regulations is sometimes dismissed as 'alarmist' or 'anti-business', despite broad scientific consensus.
  • Supporting universal healthcare or increased public spending on social services can be labelled as 'socialist', even when these policies are common in many successful democracies.
  • Calling for racial or gender equity is occasionally framed as 'woke ideology', rather than a push for fairness and inclusion.
  • Backing union rights or fair wages may be portrayed as anti-capitalist, even though they aim to protect workers from exploitation.
This shift in perception raises questions about how (political) narratives are shaped and why centrist or progressive stances are increasingly seen as radical or problematic.

Same the other way, very easy to have a view that some call right wing.

i would have responded in agreement, but i would get cancelled too.. And that is my irritation.
(BTW, i am staunch capitalist..... not a yogurt knitter). Somehow people struggle to see how I can be both.

Do you not think phrases like that are symptomatic of the problem? I understand the drive for profits. I've worked for international companies all my life.
Besides, have you ever tried to knit yoghurt? It ruins your trousers and the stains can lead to embarassing questions.

i was trying to choose between tree hugger and yogurt knitter.. I have tried it, but the probiotic ones are lot more messier.

I was wondering today whether, in their day, anti-slavery campaigners, those who supported the suffragette cause or people who were in favour of the 1965 Race Relations Act would have been described as ‘woke’ in their time if that had been the vernacular.
