Random Irritations

This forum is educational! I always thought SWMBO came from the long running Rumpole of the Bailey TV series - that’s how he refers to his wife Hilda.
I think it started to be a popular phrase after the 1887 Rider Haggard book was made into a film in 1965 starring Ursula Andress as "she who must be obeyed".

Having to do the annual 'Car Insurance' dance for my car and Mrs Slime's car.
What a depressing performance that is!
I did save just over £200 though.

Builders coming in this week to spend ~4 weeks ripping out and replacing the kitchen. We’ll have no kitchen sink or tap for a while.
Have set up one of the spare rooms upstairs to use as a temporary kitchen, using the bath as the kitchen sink.
Just figured out that the cold tap on the bath is fed from the water tank in the loft. 🦠🤮
The basin cold taps are fed directly by the mains drinking water but you can’t fit the water jug under them.
But you can fill the water jug from cups though...

As every year, the clamber to celebrate St Patrick's Day from people who mostly aren't even Irish or had one Irish relative 4 generations ago. While St George's Day is decidedly quieter - not to mention St David's and St Andrew's days which are not even mentioned. The whole thing just feels like a marketing triumph by Guinness these days.

Bit like Christmas and the advent of Santa Claus wearing red, with the right marketing you can turn anything no matter how benign into a money spinner.

That's so funny, I was thinking the same thing this morning (about Coca-Cola making Santa's outfit red supposedly) while grumbling to myself. 😄 Wouldn't be surprised in the future if the green for Paddy's Day is phased out and everyone is wearing black with a white stripe at the top.

It’s good fun though 🇮🇪 ☘️

My wife is half Irish and even she gets annoyed at the faux celebrations around it. We have a full on Paddy's day celebration at work, basically an excuse for everyone to get trollied and I will be moaned at all day for refusing to go and called 'boring' but I'm ok with that as I won't have wasted money and won't be hungover at work tomorrow.

Strangely, whilst in Japan some months back we bemoaned the absence of bars as we know them. Then one night we stumbled across an "Irish Bar" and it was a blessed haven, but we only had two nights 😒

I don't mind it, just think the other days should actually get more attention. My daughter has a Scottish grandfather and some Welsh blood from my side, but these days don't get a mention. She's currently wearing green at nursery with the other kids though (yes we still took part as it's a bit of fun as you said), despite having no Irish blood at all. Something feels off.

Think St Andrews day gets some attention in Scotland same with St David’s Day in Wales

St George’s - well unfortunately I think it’s hard because some use it as an excuse to go beyond patriotism
