Random Irritations

Gearboxes are becoming so complex that a removal, strip, replace and rebuild (with an hourly rate of about £220 + VAT) some manufacturers think probably just as well replace it.

My mate runs a garage and took on a Mercedes C63 dual clutch gearbox strip and rebuild and it was 54 hours labour with a £850 + VAT part.

Now Stu only charges £80 + VAT hourly so about a £6.3k bill to the customer. Merc wanted nearer £9.5k.

He will get one such job a year roughly as most will just ask him to source a refurbished or 2nd hand gearbox.

Take that labour time to Porsche and assume it’s a clutch pressure sensor (one of the cheaper parts at c.£455 + VAT) and you’re looking at about £14k for just a repaired gearbox.

Football pundits saying "VAR is just checking to see if Dave was in an offside position when he tapped the ball in".

NO

VAR will be checking if Dave was offside when the ball was played forward. Doesn't matter where Dave was stood when he puts the ball in the net.

Christmas shopping. Have spent the better part of 5 hours with She Who Must Be Obeyed wandering around Cambridge city only to buy three things and to spend more time in Costa & dress shopping than buying any Christmas presents. Can pretty much guarantee that we’ll be doing the same thing each weekend until Christmas

He went to a gearbox specialist who could replace the sensor before contacting the CEO.
Porsche would not supply the necessary part.
If that isn't illegal, it should be.

Sounds like cars are just getting too complex. (Probably all in the name of squeezing the last 0.1% of improvement in fuel efficiency).

At least when we're all driving EVs there will be no complex gearboxes and engines. The manufacturers will have to invent something else in them that can't be easily fixed.

Perhaps you should arrange to meet in the Eagle after the good lady has finished shopping and get the bus home.

They already have it, the monolith sealed electric motor. If any part of an electric motor fails the whole thing needs replaced. As a friend found out with his Tesla. Luckily for him it was under warranty.

Ah for the days when you could do stuff at home. A mate of mine was a car mechanic. I once helped him change the engine of his Vauxhall Viva by the road outside his house!🤣

I remember helping my Old Man with replacing the head gasket on his Maxi back in the 70s.... :ROFLMAO: 😬

I was a mechanic. Used to do engine swaps for fun. Now even headlights are being coded to BCMs which is a nightmare.

I used to take old MOT failed Corsas and drop 2L turbos in them and it was all pretty much backward compatible.

I think everyone back then always used to fix their own cars.
Every Sunday you could see loads of blokes out working on their cars.
I can’t even change the headlight on mine without taking the bumper off now.

Halfords hate it when I pull up and give them £7 to do it while I enjoy a coffee

My dear old dad would spit his teeth out if he was alive to see under the bonnet of my Mercedes.

Big plastic cover, and only a USB port and oil/water caps! 🤣

Double check they've delivered it and just not let you know. I had that message for days the other week. Turned out the parcel had been left round the back of the house and we hadn't seen it.
