Random Irritations

Public sector client I am working with has a similar system. There’s no EDC validation and the data isn’t used for anything (basically out of the box default fields that were left in) so we just used 01234 123456 and it worked fine.
I tried that and for a massive red warning for inputting spam data 🤣
Now I’m being purposely awkward with the higher ups and saying well you don’t want me to input false data as that negates emergency contact details but I can’t put in what doesn’t exist so what do “you want”. Putting the onus and blame on them for me and all my lads so when time comes for the rollicking the 💩 can roll up hill for a change 🤣
This is more common than you'd think.

I started a Change Role at a very well known company a few years back who'd started the ball rolling in similar way. Most of the workforce hadn't used Skype (pre MS Teams) before either.

Wish I'd known the situation before agreeing a day rate😁😁

I guess I could come out of retirement over winter!🤣🤣
Very little surprises me these days when it comes to these things with my work. It’s getting worse 🤣

So Tash swopped from sky to EE. Not a problem until.

When the Ethernet cable was coupled from Swann security cameras to the EE box like it was in the old Sky box, it wouldn’t recognise Wi-Fi. Plus the telly wouldn’t work.
So after a quick talk to Swann tech support, they gave me a Wi-Fi USB antenna details that would work. It didn’t.
I called Swann back and spoke to a nice Asian guy in a call centre who insisted on telling me that Swann would never say that as I should buy a Swann USB antenna. I tried to tell him that if Swann support never told me that, how did I know what product to type in on Amazon. He insisted Swann would never tell me that. He then said I need a Swann USB Antenna. So I asked him where could I get one from. The only place you can get one is in Australia. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 seriously. But he couldn’t supply a link.
So this afternoon I spoke to another Lady at EE and asked for her advise coz surely I was missing something.
She was very patient and understanding. She suggested a Wi-Fi boost box with an Ethernet cable direct to the Swann box. So I went out and bought one from Argos and not gonna lie it was a Fanny about. But having a look on the SWANN site during fanny about time. What do I find. The very TP link boost box I bought is recommended by Swann. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 so why did the Tech support tit not suggest this.
Suffice to say, during fanny about time I mentioned to missis T about moving the boost box to hall at the side of the router box, and resetting the boost box with a paper clip. Suffice to say, it worked. After a stressful couple of hours for missis T Ave told her she needs to seriously up her game.
Me, am sure the bruising will not come out till after the golf tomorrow and the swelling is Covered by my trousers and underpants. although I might have a limp.

Bloody tech support my arse. 🤬

I now realise there’s little to be concerned about re climate change or any other impending humanity driven doomsday scenario

The population of under 25’s who are so frequently ill, incapacitated or otherwise unable to drag their fragile carcasses into work with such frequency all indicates that their drastically shortened life expectancy and therefore ability to procreate are now so diminished that the planets next generation population levels & consequent demand for resources will be a mere fraction and the world will have plenty time to repair itself

And that is a post I really want to comment on but the can of worms to be opened would be massive.

A groin strain. Did it at tennis five weeks ago. It's ok when I walk in a straight line, but when I twist,......Jesus H Christ....it takes my breath away and I have to stop, gather my thoughts. No sign of it going away.

It’s true every the amount of people under 25 we have self certifying every week or getting themselves medically downgraded to avoid easy tasks is becoming laughable and then they moan when older guys complain they’re having to cover their work for them!

Open it you know you want to

Ex manager, and actual God, not managing his current team well enough to beat a team below his current team and therefore missing out on coming "home" to play v the team where he is thought of as a God.

I suspect part of the problem is that many of them finished/left school/started first jobs, during covid lockdowns, saw the population doing WFH or (worse still) paid to stay there under furlough schemes (as essential as they were) and they appear to have a adopted a totally false impression of what it means to have a job/work for a living

you could we be spot on with that and partly parents fault to smothering kids and not getting them out socially interacting with others so don’t understand how they come across and how to work with a sniffle or a slightly down day that her all have but have to find ways to work around it.

It's easy to tar a whole generation with the same brush but I suspect not much has really changed from when we were younger. Just because WE were conscientious at work, it doesn't mean all of our generation were. We employed a young guy at work, utterly useless but we soon realised that no one had told him what was required, his family history was one of constant unemployment. We had to educate him regarding starting on time, not walking out when his girlfriend just turned up or going to the bank in our time, not his. He had no understanding so we had to give him one. Don't assume that everyone knows what is required, educate them.

But, yes, blimey when you have one it really is frustrating.

Yep. I have worked and still work with lead swinging malingerers of all ages.

Totally agree.

I don’t see it as any better or worse now than it ever has been. I have worked with some terrible malingerers down the years, including one officer who managed somehow to rack up over three years on the sick before she retired on ill health grounds with less than 25 years in the job. Those close to her knew she was swinging the lead but weak supervision allowed her to get away with it. Her retirement was ultimately as much to do with getting rid of someone who had become seen as too difficult to manage as it was down to her actually being too incapacitated to work.

She was far from alone. A guy I joined with had an appalling sickness record - he genuinely never went a full calendar month without time off somewhere for some minor ailment. Again, weak supervision was the key to allowing him to get away with it.

People exploiting weak management and taking sick leave at the drop of a hat is absolutely nothing new. It’s been happening since I entered the workplace all those years ago, and will always be a problem where there are supervisors and managers who see it as too much of a problem to address.

A lot of it is also down to upbringing, as all things are. My wife and I rarely had days off school with ailments, or anything else. I even went to school the day my dad passed away, so strict was my mum. And we rarely took time off work. As a consequence, my kids both had a near 100% attendance at school and have carried that ethos into their adult lives.

It’s nothing generational, and it’s absolutely wrong to suggest today’s younger generation are any worse than those who preceded them.

New washing machine arriving later today.

Removed the old one and the water to feed the machine won’t fully turn off.🤬🤬🤬
The ball valve isolater are a pain as they get older. If it’s just a small weep, a 3/4 BSP cap will do. The other option is to remove the blue lever and using engineer pliers slowly rotate to shaft until is at 90 degrees to the fitting and the water stops getting out.
I admit that can be a touch interesting as the shaft can really stiffen up. You do have to use some judgement on it. ;)
