Random Irritations

Thinking about past jobs and realised that (almost) every company I’ve worked for in 40+years… is no longer trading !
I worked in IT for 37 years for four different companies before retiring.
Three of them are now gone.
Ironically the only one still in business is the one that most deserves not to be.

Has the successful one been overcharging customers and underpaying employees?
If it has been getting away with that, it would explain how it has "beaten" the competition undeservedly and been far more profitable.

That'll be fjs 🤣

My FiL was the original owner of the company I run now, he's been retired for about 20yrs. He still comes in every so often, plonks himself down and then starts to reminisce about past competitors and customers. It's a similar situation, so many are gone. Even the ones who were a licence to print money, bust.

It's an interesting analysis as to why but still brutal.

The concept of a job for life at one company in the private sector really is hanging by a thread now, a very fine thread

My first company, who I served my apprenticeship with I stayed with for 11 years after qualifying, when I handed in my notice to chase the bigger bucks they were shocked as most of the guys were 30 years plus, job for lifers.

Sadly the company some years later was taken over by someone who was then taken over by Carrillion and they all went down the pan together. I've been with the present company for 24 years now but looking back at the number of main contractors and competitors that have gone pop is scary.

Every year he makes a post saying don't worry if you got poor results, because he didn't get any and he's now a millionaire. Variations on that theme. I'm not sure why he does it every year.

Seems a fair shout - a lot of people will be panicking and thinking the world is ending if they don’t get great results

But it’s also worth remembering that the world is full of people that didn’t do great in school but have gone on to be successful

But he has been doing it for years and in a very smug way.

It's meant to take the pressure off kids panicking about poor results. It's not the worst post to make each year.

Smug is just part of his "act".
I know a young man who will hopefully find solace and a bit of hope in those words this morning. I've been saying similar stuff to his dad, although I'm talking about new kitchen cupboards rather than a helipad.
"Don't worry about your results, I just got new kitchen cupboards" doesn't really have the same ring to it mate.
