Agree with your first section, if he is hoping to do more intricate work then maybe he should try a bit harder.true... but he wants to shelves and cabinets as his side hustle on weekends for some extra money. I am assuming site work is a bit slow because he turned up on a weekday. He needs the money as he is off on holidays.
So if he into that, i was hoping he could a bit better on the thinking aspect of it.

But vehemently disagree with your last point. A good tradesman should notice when the design isn't quite right and suggest a better way to do it. A lot of people who design things have no idea how to build them so usually come up with totally inappropriate designs that are impossible to actually make.
