Having driven to Bristol this morning, I wanted to listen to coverage of the start of the Open during the long drive.
The best I could find was on R5Live and I had the misfortune of having to listen to Nicky Campbell live from the course.
Unsurprisingly for the BBC - official Broadcaster for the Socialist Worker party - the coverage was dreadful. Apart from coverage of a couple of notable tee shots, no golf was discussed. Rather, the focus was on related issues including what difference a sports psychologist makes, who random punters thought might win and most importantly, why doesn't St Georges let ladies join.
Time and again, the supposed elitism of golf was brought up as the key issue. Notably, Nickly Campbell was impertinent to the point of rudeness when questioning Peter Dawson about St Georges and why the Open was there. PD responded with dignity but it was obvious he wasn't impressed.
Thankfully, the proper coverage will start later this morning. Ridiculous though that on the morning of the biggest championship in golf, held in England, we have to listen to such utter trip from the primary radio sports channel that the BBC run.
Pathetic - I don't know why I pay my licence fee sometimes.
