He may well be one of the well-known band of players who will submit 3 Supplementaries to keep their artificially high handicaps active.

I was hoping you would reply. What would you do, I respect your knowledge of the rules and would appreciate your input.

You see this is where I tend to agree but I'm also VERY conscious that it looks horrendous if I bring it the the attention of the authorities involved!

No more horrendous than if you were actually playing them and they broke a rule, you would probably report it then.
As I say, I see this game as one of trust and integrity - that stems from a set of rules and a code of conduct. So what happens if these guys go on and win the comp and then get found out? Better it gets sorted earlier rather than later IMO.

i was put in a similar situation a few years ago ( different scenario) and i just told the competition committee about my misgivings, they must have investigated because i got a phone call telling me i did not have to play this round and got a bye,if your in doubt just tell them as if everything is fine i'm sure they would keep it confidential.

If the rules state they should have an Active handicap to start tell the organisers and put the onus on them. If you had caught them moving their ball 3 foot I am sure you would have objected.

They need to abide by The terms and Rules of The Competition. If the organisers let it go that is up to them and the monkey is off your back and IF they do beat you what will happen to their opponents in the next round?

If you are absolutely certain that they have played in previous rounds without meeting the criteria for entry, then I don't see that you have any choice but to act.

Agree with rosecott, it isn't only you who have been wrong here and the pairs who lost would need to have time to play their matches, should they be reinstated. (if this is allowed)

I'd wait and if the match is going badly, lob it into the chit-chat on the teebox

In these situations, always ask yourself, what would Paul Azinger do?...... :D

It's not your fault - they're the ones who entered in contravention of the rules, thereby putting anyone who found out in an uncomfortable position.

I'd say you have to report it. It may be that nothing happens, that's up to the organising committee, but at least then you'll play with a clear conscience.

On no account should you "keep quiet unless you lose". You won't come out of that well.

Please, please have a word with someone.

I have no time for cheats and I could never condone a member or club official supporting any sort of rule bending.

HOWEVER.....

I was inactive back in March (?) and entered all the summer knockouts. I wrote to the secretary and explained I would either be active within 3 weeks (the allotted time) or step down.

At my club, it would seem acceptable to do this.

Either they were active or not on the playing of the 1st game?

I realise it's seems I'm contradicting myself, but there are lots of possibilities here.

Go and ask.

What would you do if you discovered that the opponents that you were due to play in a tie hadn't met the entry criteria? You also have cast iron proof of this fact!

I would innocently asked the competition committee to clarify - if you don't it could be even more embarrassing for them (committee) if they got the finals and it was raised there!

34-1b/8 lays out the alternatives available to the committee in respect of the players beaten by them, and you would probably find yourselves playing the last beaten pair (if the decision came to me).

there are 2 things you shouldn't do IMO

1. post to an internet forum if you aren't going to do anything, it's a small world.
2. raise it afterwards if beaten.

"The Committee must determine further procedure in equity (Rule 1-4). The choices are:
(a) cancel the competition;
(b) consider the disqualification penalty applicable only from the time of its discovery, thus giving A's next opponent a default;
(c) reinstate the player last eliminated by A; or
(d) require all players eliminated by A to play off for his position."

personally I would see (b) and (c) as the appropriate options in a club pairs knockout competition, with a preference to (c)

I would put the onus on them to mention it to the competition secretary as rules is rules especially handicap ones as they have a big influence on the outcome of a game. Plus if other people in the club know then tell them this as well and leave it to them to decide how to procede. They will do the right thing I'm sure and recognise it as a genuine mistake even if it was a bit of jiggerypokery. The inflated handicap scenario is a big issue in golf is it not. If he was originally a 5 or 6 handicapper I'll bet this wouldn't be an issue.

It cannot be left, however, heres what I would do.

I'd call them BEFORE playing the tie and tell them what you know (you have proof you state), I'd suggest THEY need to clarify with the competition organisers THEIR standing BEFORE playing the tie.

Let's say you don't and they beat you, then their next opponents find out, report them and they are disqualified, how will that make you feel?

I reckon this is the best option give them the chance to own up first?

I'd just play... I enjoy playing golf - that's all there is to it.

Could have claimed my match against a scratch golfer in a cup game as he was 7 mins late for our tee time... but what's the point? Beating what is in front of you is the name of the game, for me.
