Played in our monthly medal yesterday. Didn't play too badly, still getting 0.1 back mind you. I hit the ball pretty well just couldn't seem to score.

Putts lipping out didn't help

Generally, the ones missed were outside of 4ft and even from outside of 20ft I was catching a piece of the cup, but just could not get the ball to drop.

After the ball had lipped, I was never more than a foot to 18" away, but it got so annoying when it kept happening.

I had 10 lip outs yesterday, 10!

I've heard the saying said before that "Not all good putts go in", which bring me to my question.

I your view. Is a putt that lips out the result of a good putt, or a bad putt?

Good or bad it's irrelevant. It's a missed putt and ultimately that is all that really counts right?

Exactly! A lip-out is probably a 'better' putt than one that misses completely, but that is only degrees of 'not good enough to drop'.

Lip-outs (or even Lip-ins!) are not good puts if they are from 2 feet!

I don't get bogged down with lip-outs, but am happy to get that close from 20 feet.

Sounds like we had the same weekend!!!

Tee to green played really nicely (I'm not going to pretend it was perfect scratch golf) but could I get a putt to drop???
We (FC and I) counted up at we were walking off the 17th green that I'd missed 9 putts in 10 holes by in total about 3 inches most of them finishing up immediately behind the hole!
Walked off with a 0.1 (back to 8 then) from a round that should've been comfortably buffer!
I know "There's no pictures on the card" but this is one of those times I wish there was!

I have days where the putts have a look in the hole but don't drop, its just one of those things and I look forward to the day when they all drop.....

It means you're missing nearer

this ^^^^^^

its only good if it goes in.

Some well stuck (rolled) good putts stay out and some badly stuck (bobbled) putts go in.

If you were only 18inches away the pace so good just the line was a fraction out.

Were they all left lip or right lip?

Predominantly right edge pal.

The one that hit the left edge was down to a poor read. I read the putt as little to no break, turns out it had about 1/2 a cup to the left.

Very much agree.
I can recall getting some strange looks from PP's when I have said 'good putt' to one that has lipped out.

It happens. I wouldn't be too concerned. Pace sounds great and the read or line is only a fraction out. If the lip outs weren't the sole contributions to the 0.1 back I'd look at tee to green to see where the problems were

Lip out from 30ft - great putt, lip out from 1ft - awful putt!

You have days like it, I certainly did on the greens again yesterday, the only real worry for me would be that you are predominantly missing them all one side. Do you tend to see too muich right to left break, are you aiming slightly right of where you think or are you slightly pushing all your putts?

I've had bad putts lip in and good putts lip out.
I've had good putts lip in and bad putts lip out.

If I make a good roll on the line I pick and it doesn't go in, it's still a good putt. The result doesn't make a putt good or bad.

What if it lips out on the low side, less pace wouldn't help with that?

I don't know, if it lips out at all its been hit too hard!

ive just got what you mean! I mean the pace at which the ball arrives at the hole.

you would need a slightly different line for the ball to arrive at the same bit of the hole with less pace!
