Putts that lip out - What's your view?

Dave Peltz has calculated that the optimum distance /weight for a putt to minimise lip outs is 17 inches "past the hole"

I don't believe that's simply to avoid lip-outs, though they are included in the 'misses'.

From my memory - and I think Gareth has/had my old 'Putting Bible' - that's the optimum speed to 'hold the line' and prevent imperfections knocking the ball off line.

Optimum speed to avoid lip-outs completely is a dead weight putt - where the ball simply falls into the hole as it has no momentum .
