Looking at my fairly dissapointing results over the last few weeks, it still seems I am averaging 31 -34 putts per round, with never more than perhaps 1 or 2 3putts.
Im not bad at chipping around the green, but my Sand play is pretty dire at the mo', so given that, I guess 31-34putts per round is ok ?

How many putts do you take on average ?

The way I see it, if you're playing the course to par you should take 36 (2 putts on each green). Any less than this has to be good.
I probably average about 28-30 as I don't hit many greens, chip up close and 1 or 2 putt. I'm not often so far from the pin that I'm in 3-putt territory - although I suppose anywhere on the green is really!!

Just checked on SS2 and of the cards I have entered over the last 6 weeks (not all rounds have been inputed) I have averaged 34 per round. Not helped by some dire performances on the last 2 cards :(... opened with 3, 4, 3 on the first 3 holes last night after feeling great and really looking forward to playing.

Going to mark that down as lack of warm up as I was running late and my playing partner had been waiting a little while and was ready for the off - another lesson learned I guess i.e. - warm up properly and get my head in gear!

Since I bought my Odyssey Sabertooth i'm averaging 1.71 putts per hole, so on average 30.78 per round according to golfers diary.

Before I got my Odyssey I was averaging 1.96 per hole which is 35.28.

I'm happy enough with my putting at the moment, like the OP I am having maybe 1 or 2 x 3 putts per round which I can live with.

Can I ask what the relevance is?

If my putts in a round are lower than 36, this is not necessarily an indication of how good my putting is. It could be an indication of how good my iron play is, as I am getting it close, or alternatively, it could be an indication of how poor my iron play is, as I have missed every green, and chipped well.

As long as you are happy with your putting (and only you can be sure), what is the significance of the mnumbers?

Chris, as you and me are on a challenge (to get to 10.4) I'd say you are doing well. On a good round, I don't 3 putt and probably 1 putt on 2-4 greens, so I guess 32 is OK for me. Depends of course on the rest of my game. If I miss all 18 greens, but am close, I'd be miserable with only 2-4 x 1 putts. On days like this, I'm looking to convert 3 up n downs per nine holes to make my 6 pars.

I've dropped under 30 a few times this season, but none of them have been good scores.

If I was to hit, say, 8 greens, I'd be happy with 36 and maybe "trade" a couple of 1 putts for a couple of 3 putts.

Eh up Dave - it does sound like we play much the same, ie miss too many greens/fairways, have to chip up, hence perhaps lower number of putts !

As in my other post, I have some bad holes recently, and a few shanks with Wedges resulting in Double/Triple Bogeys, which all wreck your card.
I then proceed to go Par/Par/Birdie, before Doubling again, etc etc...

*shakes head*

Gonna play in thursday's medal with a couldnt care less attitude, maybe even have a pound on each 9 and Overall between the 3 of us, and see if that keeps me on the straight & narrow !!

I have averaged just over 34 for the past year.

However, since I've got my new Scotty I haven't three putted yet and have been under 30 for all of those rounds.

My coach told me I should be aiming for 30 or less.

Of course if I hit alot of greens I don't mind having more putts, as long as I don't 3 putt.

My main aim is to get up & down more often if I miss a green and to improve my birdie conversion stats.

Have to agree with Murph.

Yes it's a really nice feeling to have a low stats figure for putting. But if you get to the green in 2 over GIR, no amount of great putting will bring your score down significently.

Okay, not strictly true, unless in Stableford of course!

The way I look at it is that if I get to GIR then I'm happy if I 2 putt or even 3 putt if the first is a vast distance from the pin.

If however I get to the green in 2 over GIR and have left myself with a short chip to the pin. Then I'm happy if I one putt, at most two putt.

The way I'm playing at the moment. I'd rather miss GIR and leave myself a short chip and go for the one or two putt. It just never works out that way!!

GIR and putting stats are inter-related and I don't think that they can be taken in isolation.

Though it's always nice to know where you as an individual sit in the great stats chase. But if you must know it's 38.85 for this year. Though I am just starting to get used to the new putter. I know that I can get this stat down by 5 or so if I only commited to the shot a bit more. Several putts a round are coming up short by an inch! Dead on track, just short! Bring on the faster greens!

Just to clarify. As I know that some record their putts differently.

Is that putts, as in all shots taken with a putter, regardless if on the green or fringe. Or just putts taken on the green!!!!

 :D

I'm going straight to hell for that one!!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, dont do it, you're gonna start it all off again!!

Quick....edit your post goddamnit and i'll do the same! lol

If you feel good about the way you assess your putting then thats great. The way I assess putting is based on the type of putts/distance and number.

In serious game play I have only had 2x three putts this year, but had 2 putts when it should have been one .

If your approach game is good and you land close to the flag with regularity and take 36 putts for example, this would be poor putting in my view, yet landing 20' to 30'away with regularity and having 36 putts is good putting in my book.

Numbers can give you a rough idea about your putting, but only rough, analyzing the type of putting and distance is more accurate.
, it can also tell you something about your game accuracy to the greens.

A tap in from the rim doesn't tell you how good your putting is, but the 20 footer to get there does.

Another way to test your putting is (if time and course allow) to place 3 or 4 balls on each green as you go round and putt from 3 or four different places/distances with the object of sinking the putt or leaving a tap in. How often you can achieve this will tell you a lot more about your accuracy and putting ability than numbers will. ;)

I think on average I take about 32/33 a round, but I have had days in the 20s. :D

I hit a lot of GIR's and I average around 34-36 putts which isn't very good. I'm hoping to improve on this a lot. I've just cut my putter down an inch and a half as it was 35" long before, I had a go with a friends 33" putter and felt more comfortable with it.

Last year I played in a competition where I knocked it round 4 over gross but had 40 putts oops!

According to SS2 my average for the is 33.73 although that has come down significantly from the 34.5 I had before my putting lesson in April so happy days. I had 30 putts including no 3 putts on Sunday

Over the last 50 recorded games:-

Average = 32.5 Doesn't really mean much.

More significant though....

Average putts GIR = 2.00 Not too bad I suppose

Average putts non GIR = 1.74 Must improve short game
