Putting spoiling a good round

Hi,

Have been reading through this forum for a while now and thought I would post a story about my round last week. Took a couple of days off work, headed back to Scotland and managed a couple of rounds of golf and Downfield and Ballumbie Castle. First time I had played both of these courses.

Played Downfield off the white tees meaning the course is a little under 6900 yards and a par (and SSS) of 73. Managed to shoot a 96 which is 23 over par and a couple of shots under my handicap. Drove the ball the best I have ever done (including a couple over 300 yards!!!) and was hitting my irons very nicely. I like to keep stats on a round and hit around 75% of the fairways and 50% of greens in regulation. Here's the problem though - I took 42 putts..... Only looking back I realise how much better a round it should have been. The only one thing about this is I can see clearly where I could have improved my score by a lot.

Anyway, if anybody is up in the Dundee area, Downfield is well worth a round. The sun was shining and it was a great day out.

I wasn't so keen on Ballumbie as a course mind you - thought the course was a bit featureless.

Tell me about it. Yesterday I went round in 77 (6 over par) despite three putting 3 times and 4 putting once.
I blame the greens though :(& my putting stroke and reading of the greens and distance control! ;)

You forgot to blame the dew on the greens, the jinx put on you by HID, the old putter which doesn't work any more, the stupid greenkeepers who cut the holes on slopes ................etc

My putting is woeful and really letting me down at the moment. In the Medal yesterday I finished with Net 70 which is the CSS, but had a real mare with the putter.

I can read the greens absolutely fine, in terms direction, but my touch on length has deserted me. I easily left about 6/7 puts well short of the hole that then needed a decent following putt to get them in. Needless to say I did not get all of them and 3 putted on about 3 occasions.

For me its the pace. Not sure if I am nervous of over hitting, but whatever, it's costing me at the moment.

More practice to gain confidence is all I can think of.

The longer the putt, the longer the backswing. Maybe your just not swinging it back far enough.
Experiment with the same tempo but different lengths of backswing

I need to work on my 10-15 footers. I'm holing a few but not enough and its costing me as I'm not converting birdie chances and struggling if I play a poor chip which then heaps more pressure on the short game to get it close. I've got a putting lesson on the 18th so we'll see what comes out of that

Colin, start by telling yourself your putting is great then buy a veasy and it will be.

In the meantime, try some different putters (you never know)and a more casual approach to your putting.

Ive been putting a slightly new way since Bob let me have a feel of his veasy (oooer!)and the last three times at the club were superb from a putt point of view but I need this tool to really fine tune things and train me to second nature.( no Im not on Bobs marketing team, but I believe good things should be spread around) :D

At the Ascot meet last week I scored 33 points (don't know what my gross was) which included 7 x 3 putts, a 4 putt and a blob. That's 25 putts on 8 bloody holes! Assuming I two putted the rest, thats 45 putts!! I'm normally a fairly reasonable putter, and have every faith in the stick I'm using. Crap putting which cost me a lot of points.

Tone and Herb.
The final production samples should be here next Tuesday. If they are right, they can start making 3,000. The packaging still has to be done which will take 2 weeks so they should be available in June. If your getting impatient, I was expecting these to be in the shops for last Christmas. :(

Yes Colin.
It's on my website, but because its still in production, I've only got 3 home made versions which I use for teaching.
If you go to

and click on the V-Easy tab, you will find more information.
HTH :)

Thanks Bob, looks very interesting. I'm not sure it will solve my problem though which is one of judging distances a little better i.e not lagging putts, but perhaps it will ?

I believe it will Colin. Lots of people are inconsistant in their long putts because sometimes they just swing their shoulders, other times the right hand kicks in and 'Hits' the ball and some move their hips too.
With the design of the Veasy, you learn how it feels to stroke the ball without any 'Hit' from the hands.
This way all the speed and direction is controlled by the big strong back muscles (slow twitch) and not the hands and wrists (fast twitch). Long putt, long backswing and Vice Versa
When you're watching the Masters this weekend and they show putting, watch out for
1.How little movement they have in their lower half.
2. how their shoulders tilt and not turn
3. how the Y shape angles formed by the arms and putter never changes during the stroke
Watch yourself in a mirror and compare :)
