Putting my 3 cards in….

You are at a new club and its agreat way to get your face known. Get them in and don't worry about it being too high. When I put mine in at Ascot I played one round in a force 8, one in a monsoon and another in heavy drizzle and shot poorly. I got 20 and won a few competitions but got cut mericlessly (and rightly so) to a figure that I now play consistantly to.

The other thing to bear in mind is a lot of knockout and gold board events normally require a minimum number of qualifying cards for entry (at Ascot you have to play a minimum of three qualifying competitions - monthly medals/stablefords) beofre you can enter the bigger events. Now is the ideal time to get as many cards in so you can play for the bigger prizes in the summer

As an aside but relevant to getting 3 cards in - from 2010 the EGU are starting a thing whereby you have to have returned 3 qualifying scores in the previous year to have an 'active' handicap otherwise it will be 'inactive'....

If you have an inactive handicap you MIGHT not be allowed to play in competitions by your or other clubs....so you need to hand in 3 scores in 2009 boys otherwise you'll get a little 'i' next to your name on the handicap list and become some kind of leper.....

This is being introduced this year at my club. My understanding is that if your handicap is inactive (not played 3 qualifiers in the last year), you can play in a qualifiying comp, but not win anything. Then after 3 comps you loose your * and your active again.

After all the advice I was well up for playing this morning, turned up with all my gear on and the course is closed!! DOH!!!

Took myself off to World of Golf and ended up spending the last two hours playing with new drivers, and walked out with a new Wilson Staff Spine, I love it and its added about 20 yards onto my driving getting about 260 with it on the computer thing they use. However, I have to remember to SLOW DOWN or my savage slice / hook comes back.

My, you've spent some cash recently. Have you been bought by some arabs?

Have fun with it.

I'm only jealous. I am still waiting for GM to send me my new 909. Not holding my breath on that one though.

I thought your new years resolution was to keep the driver at home and use the 3 wood. You were hitting it so well last week. I don't mind you getting the driver out and helping you look for your ball in our home and away challenge!!

Joking apart it is a wicked club. I had a go with one just before Christmas and really enjoyed the way it felt when you hit a good one and the flight is pretty good too.

Enjoy your new toy. Can't you get your own private bay at World of Golf with all the balls you hit there. Good job they don't run some sort of loyalty scheme - money off per 000 balls hit or you could have another new set of clubs

I do usually get free balls!

I know I was suppose to leave it at home but I got bored of the ting noise, I want a whack, bang, wallop when I tee off. Going to have a lesson next week and really learn how to use the thing.

Was between the Spine and Srixon Z-RW, the srixon is such a good club but the spine was flying further and move forgiving.

Interesting thread.

Generally speaking, I'd say get those cards in...!! yes....

What I will add as a after-thought is BEWARE the short course. In the winter we play off mats and I reckon the course is 500-600 yards shorter. This is "supposedly" reflected in the SSS being lowered by two strokes. We play on full greens.

I played tidy golf on all 3 of my cards (83, 83, 81 i.i.r.c.) with only one triple. But, with an 81 cut down to 80 (with a scratch of 68) I got 11.5. I would NOT have made 6 pars on the back 9 (for a +3) and rarely par 4 of those 6 off whites in the spring/summer.

I posted on here a question "how should I play, should I practice like mad, or just go and get it?"...went and practiced and paid the price. If I'd been adjusted off yellows this year, I'd be off 15 now, but the committee isn't interested. (It's a long story which everyone is bored with!!!)

So, my advice is DON'T PRACTICE, DON'T TRY TOO HARD....just turn up and play.....the bad holes will get cut back, but hopefully you won't pile in too many fluky pars.

As for the comment about "not being able to play in comp's without a h'cap" all I can say is I've NEVER been a member of a club that stops you playing in comps.....you just aren't "in" the comp, can't win anything and....if the secretary is up to scratch, he/she will use those cards (if legally filled in) to give you a h'cap.

I can't believe there are clubs that don't take the first 3 cards played off white in proper comps......mine don't!!.....and to me it's a nonsense......a new player SHOULD HAVE to hand in those cards.....good or bad.

Its one of the reasons I joined, its such a friendly club and want every one to join in on the comps no matter what.

Has he same sort of feel as Ascot where all members say hello to each other and have a good feel about the club.
