How is your relationship with golf?

After playing golf for nearly 30 years I am really starting to question my relationship with the game, I feel I have lost the love for the game and just dont get the enjoyment I once had. I think this is down to my handicap increasing and just not having the consistency to play to a level that I enjoy. I feel mentally I put too much weight on the handicap and it is killing my love of the game.

Currently have a HCP of 14 but have 5 of my best 8 scores due to go in the next 7 rounds, I have two of my sent ever scores in there as well. It is at that point now where I am avoiding playing comps to try retaining my HCP. The reality is if I play to what I know i can i should be of maybe 10, however i am currently struggling to beat 90.
My mindset is as follows:
1. 100% acceptance of every shot! Yes, even the shots that end up in the bushes or dropping shots in the bunker.
2. Hiding my score in the scoring app.
If I can remember to apply this mindset (and it can take a little effort), then golf is fun and the good shots come.

This forum is a bad place to seek balanced advice. The members are all so obsessed with the game that they come on here to talk about golf when they are not playing it. 🤣

I’ve posted over 5,000 comments in 6 years, that’s about 3 a day, and I play golf less than once a week. You’re not going to get an objective answer from me.

Anyone who puts their score above everything else is on a hiding to nothing.

Unless of course you earn your living from the game, have aspirations to earn your living from it, or play serious scratch golf.

Always stop to smell the flowers.

Took a long time to realise this and enjoy the game a million times more for it now.

Not great at present, not played since the 1st week of Aug. most of the lay up was due to an injury, but the last month or so ive not really tried to get out. we had a couple of nice days before and after Christmas when i was off, but went cycling instead. not much chance this week as we have flooding after new year and now its frozen solid with a chance of snow.

im not sure whats happened, i used to play 4 or 5 times a week.

It's still really good.

I used to wonder if when I got older and my game dropped away would I still be so enthused. It turns out the answer is yes.

I'm losing a bit of distance, as I thought I would, so now instead of driver/mid-iron or wedge it's driver/mid-iron/long iron or fairway. However, all that has happened is my focus has shifted onto improving my play with fairways and improving chipping and putting.

It's a slightly different challenge, but I'm still out there, still looking forward to each and every game, so onwards and upwards................or downwards preferably.
