To bring this to a closure..
I tried various options to tie the expanding mechanism and the legs together to see if I could get it to stay together. As soon as someone sat on it, the downward pressure would make the recliner push out
Finally, I gave up and physically disconnected the motor and hydraulic from the recliner.
Now the recliner is a simple single seat sofa or settee (or whatever it is called)... probably get another year out of it....
