Performance Difference Solo vs Playing With Others

Just let your friends count for themselves? They are only cheating themselves if they are deliberately shaving shots.

I didn't say that.

The one thing that breaks my concentration is having to count the number of shots my playing partners have made. I have too many friends who play out a hole, then turn to me and say 'was that a 5 or 6?'. You hit a 6 mate. 'did I?, one of the tee, two to the bunker ... blah, blah, blah ... oh yeah, a 6'.

It puts me off and means my mind is not free to focus on my own game.

So they ask you when the play out the hole so why are you counting during the hole instead of just concentrating on your own game and then having a think when finished ?

Because this irritates the living daylights out of me too.

Thanks for highlighting what I wrote. This still doesn't mean I am counting their scores after the hole. I do it during the hole, I do it to save me time at the end of the hole. I do it because I don't like having to mentally count up their scores whilst they explain every shot they hit. I do it because I have friends who don't seem to pay any attention to the number of shots they hit until I ask them what they scored.

It's a pet peeve, it's not rational and I don't expect you to understand.

disclaimer: I am not asking you to provide me with a solution to this, nor am I asking you to slag off my mates etc...

Historically I've played better when playing along with folk. Heightened concentration maybe. Playing solo is getting boring to be honest. No real playing partners where I am, and I just joined my course where everyone knows each other. Lost touch with folk I used to play with. My current playing partner has damaged both knees at football so hasn't played for months.

I very often play 9 holes on a Sunday night solo. I use the time to sign off the weekend and get some quiet time before work starts again on Monday. I also use it as a chance to 'try' shots. I'm working on shaping shots just now and the peace to do it solo helps. I dont tend to spend too much time putting solo though.

I score better when playing in company however, as even though it may not be a comp, I make it so in my head. i.e He's split the fairway, now I need to match him. Or get inside his ball on approach.

I like solo rounds. A chance to unwind, enjoy the surroundings and try a few things out. However the camaraderie of playing with others is what golf's about for me. I can play good and bad alone or with others
