I think people are a bit underwhelmed by it because it doesn't have the Birkdale or Hillside-esq towering dunes .

I wasn't just underwhelmed mate I was traumatised, I couldn't get over the 1st hole.
I was half expecting to see Beechers Brook or The Chair halfway down the Fairway

Its not under rated it just doesn't get preference over others in its class because as far as top NW links go, its just not as good as most others.

If it wasn't an open venue, I doubt many would put it in a top 20 let alone rate it as a top course. I think the history/nostalgia counts for most of the enjoyment, or atleast it did for me anyway.

I get course ratings are very subjective but I'm sorry pal, I've never read as much nonsense on here in ages. It's a top course, it doesn't get the Open Championship for nothing.

Birkdale
Lytham
Formby
Wallasey
Silloth
Hillside
S&A
West Lancs
Fairhaven
Formby Ladies
St Annes Old links
Royal Liverpool

My bad, sorry, my opinion must have been wrong. Along with most others.

Been enjoying this thread.

A tad too early I think for me to give my own judgement as I'm playing Birkdale for the first time in a month or two, going back to Hoylake hopefully to play in conditions whereby even standing up is possible, repeat that sentiment for Silloth (July) and Formby, I'd love to play again to appreciate it more than I did first time in my golfing infancy.

Controversial perhaps but I played Hillside 3 times before I played S&A. Everyone in my group always commented about S&A being a great course so always wanted to play it and I'd often glance over the tracks to get a sparing view of it.

Ive now been fortunate enough to play S&A twice in recent times. Not once did I look back over the tracks and wish I was playing on Hillside instead. Perhaps it's the front 9s fault but I really, really enjoy S&A. Course management is key, much like Formby. Hillside you just gotta hit the fairways and enjoy the back 9 scenery but by God the course is presented beautifully. I'm back there at the end of June, maybe I'll give myself a slap. Maybe I won't. They're both quality courses.

That's my exact thought process on S&A mate. It's just such a pleasure to play. A test, without being brutal. Beautifully presented, and always makes you make a decision on the tee. It's also a great, friendly clubhouse. I love it.

Played Hoylake a few times now. 1st time was the day after Rory's win, with all the grandstands up, sunday pin positions and playing it in The Open layout etc... and that made it my greatest golfing experience by a country mile! But as a golf course, it didn't even hit my top 5.

Played it twice since then with a member. Yes, it's a great course and it has grown on me (the holes leading out and along the estuary are simply brilliant!) but I still don't think it's up there with Birkdale or Lytham. I just get the impression that they really have to work a lot harder to get the course up to the standards of an Open. Not trick it up as such, but just a lot more work than Birkdale or Lytham. I also think that one of the main points for getting the Open back there is simply due to it's size, lots of room for spectators and all the paraphernalia of an Open.

I will give it one thing though, it's probably one of, if not the, friendliest club houses I've ever been in.

I think people are a bit underwhelmed by it because it doesn't have the Birkdale or Hillside-esq towering dunes or views out to the ocean (although the estuary does look really nice). However, as a test of golf, when the long whispy rough frames the holes, it's up there with the very very best. I think it's one of those courses, that the more you will play it, the more you will love it and rate it.

I will admit that that is the reason why I didn't feel more about it than I ought to have done.

Thats not the first, Davey.

Its the 16th when normally playing RL, or the 18th when they have the open.

The first (when playing RL), or the 3rd (your good enough on forum meets to play in the open) :)
:)) is the dog leg right, which can be chanced to play over the practice ground, but may need a favourable bounce, or play to the dog leg, as most do, but leave 180-200 in on yours second shot.

Mods can we separate out the loons who think Formby is better than Hillside out, so the people with A levels, can discuss it in peace in our smoking jackets.

Peter,

Its just you that thinks Hillside is better than Formby so get to the back of the class :D.

Hillside isn't as good as S&A either

Glynn, Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen are members of Hillside.....you'll never convince him Formby is bettere. Although Gerrard was blackballed from there so perhaps its not all bad ;)

There red seems to be a new Debate forming here...

S&A V Hillside.

I Can't comment yet but I'd certainly have Silloth and Formby ahead of Hillside without a doubt
