Good of you to admit it, kudos to you.

Wallasey better than Royal Liverpool? Give me a break. Never in a million years, and I say that as a member of Wallasey.

I take your opinion on board and do wonder if as a member of Wallasey you may have grown bored. Who knows.

But most of the people on this thread seem to echo my thoughts.

Formby Vs Hillside

1st - ok hole, nice trees at the back boring start ///// dont pull it left though.

2nd - ok hole, nice trees at the back and sides ///// good par 5, dont go left or right

3rd - nice par 5, decent shape, nice trees abound ///// driveable, or (long par 4 wind dependent) with well placed ditch

4th - bit of a staid hole, not enough trees on it //////decent par 3, tough par to be had

5th - nice par 3, fall offs everywhere /////////Good par 5, fairway at an angle, well placed bunkers, great approach btwn dunes

6th - v good hole, hidden green //////////ok hole but tough into wind

7th - Lovely quirky hole, 2 good shots needed /////////nice par 3 in a lovely setting, lovely trees framing the hole well

8th - Cracking par 5, fairway at angle to raised green////////////straightforward par 4, nothing special

9th - Brute of a hole, but very good //////////////Cracking "thinkers" hole as to placement of drive

Best of the course is over, only the odd good hole left./////////// Half way hut (extra points), best is yet to come, my friend.

10th - Par 3, tee off by some nice trees ////////////Great par 3, clubbing v important, surrounded by bother and beauty.

11th - blindish drive, 2nd is nice into a surrounding dune////wow, in with the worlds best,2nd tempts you in but beware the R/H bunker

12th - okay par 4, nice trees on the next hole //////////Troublesome par 4, hard green, as well

13th - where's the fairway........nice approach ////// Needs to good blows, raised green needing controlled shot in

14th - Good view off the tee, basic approach /////////straight, straight, but L or R at your peril

15th - Good approach and framed by nice dune system //////////Needs a good controlled drive, green complex is basic

16th - testing short par 3, forest behind /////////Brute of a par 3 for all levels, par feels like a birdie

17th - basic par 5, nothing special ////////mirror image of the 11th, probably more troublesome cos of raised green

18th - course has fizzled out over last 3 holes,downer///////// Still needs every ounce of concentration, 2 good shots required.

If Formby had no trees, aesthetically it would look a lot worse, take each physical feature of the holes and for me Hillside wins hands down. Formby's run of 5-9 is awesome, but nothing great before or after, outside of the 3rd, 11th and 15th.

Hillside's front 9 is good, but the back 9 is very strong and keeps going to the end. Formby dies off on you.

Pedro, a very good assessment of both courses.

I love Hillside and I've enjoyed it every time I've played there. Tough but great.

C'mon You can't say that! :D

Its like saying 'if St Andrews didn't have Double Greens'

Thats the point, that I dont think people look past (the surrounding aesthetics, rather than the course itself).

I think Formby is in a lovely setting but outside of 7-8 holes the actual playability of the holes isnt great, whereas Hillside is also in a great setting but narrowing it down to the playability of the actual holes, it wins.

I can see your opinion changing, Davey.........go on.......accepting the inevitable, is the road to true enlightenment, my son.:)

Birchy's quiet......;)

So is D4S, the blighter.

Haha, you need to give your head a wobble if you think Hesketh is on a par with SAOL. Hesketh is well over rated and overpriced, 5 good holes and that's it.

My head wobbles of it's own accord mate.:)

SAOL is pretty flat, but granted doesnt have any/many poor holes. It has 18 good holes, but I think Hesketh's best are a good bit better.

Hesketh actually has more good holes than that. 1,2,5,12-18 IMHO (and with a bag full of sandwiches).

Yes it is 3/5 th's of a great course, but I think you mark it against price mainly.

Junior........Junior..........:mmm:

It's certainly overpriced but those holes over the road are average at best. Some really nice holes but It's not as good as SAOL.

If it wasn't on the southport coast it wouldn't get a look in. The subs are more than Hillside.

Again, I just judged it on the course, not the price.

The two par 5's across the road are good holes though.

Number 1 for is Birkdale by a country mile. A measure for me is would I revisit. Lytham bored me just after the turn for a few hole = might revisit.

Royal Liverpool I'd revisit but only to feed the cattle I'd let loose on it.

Hillside and S&A I'd revisit loads. Loved them both.

Formby I need to revisit. Loads of positive comments on here but I wasn't impressed at all. Hopefully a return would open my eyes to it.

Hesketh I felt was underrated. Take it elsewhere where it doesn't have to compete with the likes of Hillside and S&A and it would get a more favourable viewing.

Fantastic stretch for a weeks golfing holiday... Who wouldn't enjoy the Golden Mile? Yuk!

This man speaks 1,000 % sense, and he's an experienced old codger, to boot.:whoo:

I agree. I actually think Heskeths 'over the road' holes are under rated, whereas the links holes are really good. That said, I think the condition of SAOL is miles better than Hesketh. Certainly was last Summer. Given the choice of full time membership at either........toss a coin.

'If Formby had no trees'......what about if Hillside had no sand dunes ?

Hillside chews you up and spits you out. Formby gently caresses you as you go round ;) Hillside has the best holes, Formby is the more enjoyable course over 18 holes and the one I'd rather be a member at. Just my opinion of course.
