Hawkeye's post about people to turning up for medal times got me thinking about a problem we have. of guys booking times then just not turning up.

The only time its difficult to bet a tee time at our place is AM at the weekend. The times fill up sometimes 3 weeks in advance. Very often when we tee off at 9 ish on a Sat morning the tee is booked solid with no gaps on the sheet, trouble is half won't turn up, esp it not perfect conditions.

what sanctions do your club enforce on people just not turning up??

Currently a 4 comp ban

But changing it to a grading system

1st - offence - a letter
2nd offence - 3 comp ban
3rd offence - 6 comp ban

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

Happens regularly at our place as it's 7 days a week booked tee slots. Weekends and especially winter weekends get booked really fast and have to be on the phone at 7.30am a week before to try and get through and book a slot. Before we joined we asked about this and what happens if people don't show and the answer was "nothing"...

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

If you have a computer booking system, you could block the booking previleges for a few weeks.
However their mates could just book for them.

It's not very closely monitored at my club and winter weekends are chocka.
I've given up playing winter weekends, but a lot don't have that luxury

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

in the summer months we have a starter on so the club know who's not turning up as the starter kept a record. not sure they will do anything though.

you log in with username and password unique to you, mates cant add your name.

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

Our system lets you book a tee time for you and 3 mates. Not sure how blocking works

Same in our place , you can book the line (3 names) you could even book your own on one line then the other 2 on any other line or lines you want to a maximum of 3

That promotes Clique city, and booking people in without knowing their diary or movements which in turn can create the no shows!

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

no tee bookings at my place except for certain comps. Tees can get blocked out for a society etc, but club members can not book a tee for anything other than board comps and very few other things. just turn up and wait. To be fair for me, it works well.

I personally only book people in once we have agreed to play together.

I'm not that keen on the booking system at my club- seems to favour bigger groups

so for a monthly medal that most want to tee off early to free up Saturday you turn up and theres 36 other guys with the same idea. Madness in todays hectic lifestyle.

To be honest, weekend medals are not a problem, I would say the average age at my club is in the 60's, the weekends are dead as all the old boys play midweek mornings!

I see your point and the potential for issues, but right now its not a problem and if it were to become one, the club is very proactive to sort.

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

I played at the rather posh Royal Winchester Golf Club a few weeks ago. There they have no booking system, just a spiral ball rack. You put your ball in at the top and when it emerges from the bottom it's your turn to tee off. Oddly enough the first Muni club I played at had the same system. Seems to prevent a lot of arguments about no shows, even if you may have to wait for a while before you can tee off. :)

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

I have played a friends club that has no booking system and seems to work OK. Altough I prefer a booking system, its not hard to ring and cancel if you know you cant make it.

Re: not tuning up for a booked tee time.

We have to book in at the pro shop and only for competitions, otherwise its just a turn up and play situation. Our comp sheets come out 2 weeks before the comp date and we can book our and others players names in. Not many book in and fail to show but we have recently been warned that anyone just not showing on the day may be banned for 2 competitions - it's not really a huge issue

At the moment you put your name up on the sheet by the pro shop if you want a dedicated tee time and are drawn in random groups. As Hawkeye said the club are supposedly clamping down on no shows although whether they do is open to huge debate and I'm certain the "faces" will contine to get carte blanche to do what they like as they do now. If you don't want a booked tee time then roll up from the alloted time (after the booked times and the lady's booked times) and go out. If you don't play, just don't turn up. Aside from these booked times in comps we don't have any booked times and its not a problem to anyone if you do or don't play

We are introducing an on-line booking system but this will be for selected 'off peak' times only. Idea is that club wants to sell more green fees for off peak times but recognises that some members (like me) want to roll up and have a few holes and we'll normally do this 'off peak' - it is very frustrating to roll-up to club at ''off peak' time and find a good few folk on the tee or about to head there. So we will be able to check for off-peak bookings around when we fancy playing.

No plans for 'peak times' so not having to deal with this issue. Don't have too much sympathy for 'busy lifestyle' argument as being a reason for introducing 'peak time' booking system. We'll be able to book our medal and other competition times using the system and current sanctions for non-appearance will apply.
