Playing the Pro Am at John O Gaunt yesterday we were waiting to tee off and were watching the group behind play their shots into the green

One guy was in the bunker - played out , cracked into the pin and the ball stayed right on the lip

The chap then went up to the green to either mark it or finish it off - the pro in their team asked him to leave it there and the proceeded to chip the ball deliberately onto the players ball and got an "inoff" into the hole for a birdie. To hit the ball was a great bit of skill

But the pro we were playing with said it's not really the right way to do it - it's not against the rules obviously but just felt it's not the correct way to play as leaving the ball there makes the hole bigger ?

I could see our pros thinking and understand but could also see why the other pro left the ball there ?

What's the general feeling of this then ?

Surely you aren't allowed to ask someone to leave their ball unmarked with the intention of hitting it with your next shot?

you can ask, but a player doesn't have to leave a ball there. if its his team partner and the pro is off the green I see no reason why not.

If he's that accurate then good luck to him, he doesnt need the ball there if he's that good.

Rule 22-1

In stroke play, if the committee determines that competitors have agreed not to lift a ball that might assist any competitor they are disqualified.

It's not against the rules

And Pro Am's for the Pro's are part of their living with money on the line.

Well if it's not against the rules am I reading this wrong?

Competitor Requests That Ball in Position to Assist Him Not Be Lifted

Q.In stroke play, B's ball lies just off the putting green. A's ball lies near the hole in a position to serve as a backstop for B's ball. B requests A not to lift his ball. Is such a request proper?

A.No. If A and B agree not to lift a ball that might assist B, both players are disqualified under Rule 22-1.

They are all in the same team and as such not "competitors" against each other ?

Definitely against the rules, by requesting it be left there. If the other player agrees for it to be left there both are DQ.

It's OK if you play your stroke before anyone comments or offers to mark it though!

Interesting - going to have a good chat with them at the next one

Wonder if it will be about the wording each person makes ?

In match play (as opposed to stroke play), which i would asume they was playing, there is no penalty if a player putts his ball on the green and strikes another ball on the green. Neither the player nor his partner is penalized when the one ball ricochets off the other ball into the hole, and the ball is holed [Rule 19-5a].
However, a player is always entitled to have another ball lifted if he feels it will assist anyone’s play [Rule 22-1]. One of the opponents should have told the player to mark and lift the ball that was in a position to help his partner. Since neither player on the opposing team thought to make this request, they are stuck with the result.

id just take my hat off to the pro and say good shot..
