No women at Muirfield

Have we copied and pasted our responses from the previous 532 threads on this? I don't think anything new has been said yet!

It's been a while since I've read a thread on Tiger's infidelities could someone start one please so we can all register our disgust at his fall from grace!

Lastly, I admire Muirfield for flying in the face of this. Much better to stick to your guns than take the frankly ridiculous route that Augusta have gone down with a couple of high profile, purely token, lady members.

The Augusta thing is a joke. I have heard so many people over the last few days use Augusta as a reason the Muirfield should allow women as they have "seen sense" and allowed women when in actual fact all they did is invite a couple of high profile ladies to satisfy the few who really cared.

Ive got nothing to add to this as I completely agree with everthing you've said, and lets face it the blokes who back up the women are the "hen pecked" types.

Lets face it, those men who need to escape to an all male environment at every opportunity are those socially inadequate blokes who are a bit shy around girls.

Oh, and by the way, I firmly believe in Private Clubs being able to stipulate who they wish to accept as members.

I don't believe it's quite as token as you state.

Augusta is apparently a very corporate organisation (or at least Senioe Executive). Thr CEO of IBM is traditionally invited to join and Virginia Rometty was going to cause something of a 'problem' for them.

I think that was probably a 'timely' opportunity.

I don't think anyone is saying that (if they are then that's crazy), I think people are implying that it's one of the issues stopping people. So if they suddenly let it women members, there wouldn't be a massive influx of new participants, but it would have to be as a whole host of reforms to change the way the sport is viewed.

Very good point. It is part of the perception of the game. Can anyone really argue that the fuss in the media about this has done the image of the game any good at all? Has it improved the chances of the game being seen as inclusive and welcoming? As the R&A must have been very naive if they did not see this coming and completely out of touch with modern sensibilities. Perish the thought.

To be honest I feel a bit for Dawson a bit as I had him down a complete bumbling fool. But reading some of his interviews it seems to me that he does understand the issue and sees it as a problem for the image of the game. But then he can come across as either unwilling or incapable of doing some simple things about it, which is an problem.

Gosh, now you mention it you are right. I am a bit hen pecked, that's it, you've cracked it. Well worked out, men who happen to believe in equality are in fact hen pecked. Terrific.

Sexism is rife throughout golf. Muirfield is, if you like, the high profile tip of the iceberg. Stopping the open from going there would be purely symbolic but would at least suggest that the game's governing body was serious about making the sport welcoming and inclusive for all.

It'd be even better if women were not treated as second class members at mixed sex clubs throughout the country.

What a load of utter crap! I'm a member of 2 clubs, at both of them women pay the same subs as the men, get the same rights of access to the course at weekends yet in both clubs they still have 'Ladies day' where they have exclusive use of the course on Thursdays until lunchtime.

That is discrimination....against men!!

Sorry it's not crap, it's a fact. Who cares about "ladies morning" on Thursday? That's probably a "compromise" cos they can't get on at weekends. How does that help those that work? Women are systematically discriminated against at golf clubs.

Then I suggest you look at joining a different club because as stated, the 2 clubs I'm in they get a better deal than men.

How many times a month is the course closed to the ladies for all or part of the weekend for a men's comp?

Gah! I've tried so hard to stay out of this thread. Idiocy and pathetic point scoring abounds.

2 days a year....Men's invitation day and club championship. As opposed to 52 half days a year for ladies day. Although in the winter months, those half days are effectively whole days as you struggle to get 18 holes in after 12pm

Sorry, I'm not interested in the general direction of this thread. But I should point out that at my current club, Ladies membership is cheaper, they get 1/2 a day when they get priority and other than major regional comps, I can't remember the last time that a Ladies comp was held over the weekend. This means that they are restricted from accessing the course until after 2ish on most weekends. They don't complain, but that's probably because of the reduced green fees, but they can only wish that our club was as enlightened as the 2 that you are a member of.

Almost sure i read on here a while ago, that women are allowed to play golf at Muirfield and into parts of the clubhouse , but not allowed to become a member. It may have been some other club though

You are absolutely correct, they can play the course and go into the clubhouse. IIRC they also have a ladies changing room.
