What's the most common cause of penalty on the pro tour, according to our forum colleague who was told by John Paramore ?

probably 20-2-c related, although generally tour players have learnt to call over the rules official any time they touch the ball (other than with the club!)

so, something related to an impulsive act - rule 23 springs to mind

LR infringements are also common when the tour travels but are wide ranging.

money on rule 23

Ball moving when addressing it???
I'm normally very careful but called myself twice on this last Sunday.
Well, once when I addressed it. The other time I went to move a twig that was behind the ball....how was I supposed to know that it was buried and actually went underneath the sodding thing too.

playing ChrisD's provisional in a matchplay against Smiffy on purpose so he could win and get false hope about Woodhall Spa!:)

Thats right mate - after all it's an easy mistake to make - it was only a different numbered ball, a different make and had my marking clearly on it but it was the same colour as yours - lets be honest it shouldn't even be a penalty!

No. But if the ball moves after address, outwith (love using that word in England) the player's influence, then no penalty - and ball to be played from new position.

I've a feeling that this will become the most misunderstood/abused rule in golf, the actual wording is "if his ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.".

I've already seen several examples of people not understanding this and just thinking there should be no penalty when there was clearly no outside influence on the ball.

Disagree! Certainly room for misinterpretation, but that 'award' (of shame) will continue to be the set of rules/conditions that allow cheats to improve their lie! Pressing down behind the ball in the rough, right to take a stance, identification of ball - that magically goes from buried to tee-ed up etc!
