As you all know, my short game woes have reached new depths over the last few months and after trying to fix it myself I gave in and had a lesson. Today was my first round since the lesson on Monday and all I had was a couple of practice sessions under my belt. Despite not having any on course success I went into today actually looking forward to missing some greens and putting it into practice. I didn't have to wait long, first hole, tee shot short, 1 chip, 1 putt = Par to start

As the round went on I realised something else was happening that I hadn't really expected, I actually stood over my approach shots not caring about missing greens. Whether that was a factor in me only missing 2 more greens in the next 9 holes and both of those in bunkers I can't say for sure, but it can't have hurt. I won't go through hole by hole as I'm sure you don't care but 18 was the hole which I feel might change the way I play forever. My normal train of thought on Par 5s is to layup to 100 yds and take my chance from there.

Today however, that changed. I hit my tee shot left and was partially blocked by an oak tree. The shot needed to be a low draw which I hit great but an inch to high and caught a branch leaving me about 230yds from the centre of the green. I can't hit 230yds but instead of laying up to 100 yards and pretty much accepting a bogey, I now had a new option, smash the 3W as close to the green as possible and trust the fact that I can chip. I managed to get it to about 20 yards short of the green and with the pin at the back had plenty of green to play with I went through the options my pro had talked to me about, pulled the PW, picked my landing spot and stuck it about 4ft right of the pin, sunk the putt and made a par that this time last week I could never have made.

I shot 77 and hit a lot of great shots (a few ropey ones too) but of all the shots I hit, of all the shots I have ever hit, all the holes I have ever played the way I made par on 18 today has absolutely made my weekend.

Sorry for boring you all but Mrs H really doesn't care and I had to tell someone :D

What techniques are you using Hawkeye. The old style with ball back and plenty shaft lean, Homers linear method or some other style.

Interesting read Mike , thanks for sharing , i defo think if you have confidence of getting up & down it takes pressure off the longer irons & as a result ya hit them better.. kinda like now you have a short game you wont need it as often ha

With ref to the OP.

Having a short game that you can rely on can sometimes stop you going for those stupid "Seve" type shots too. Instead of trying to hit a 30 yard draw round a tree from 180 yards out onto the green, (that hardly ever comes off), just hit a simple shot 20 yards short of the green and get up and down from there. Doesn't work every time, but if it doesn't work you make bogey instead of double or worse.

I don't know if it has a name. Basically I address the ball as if it was a putt, move my left foot back an inch but not angled towards the target, shift my weight onto my left foot and hit the shot as if it were a putt. The aim is to get the ball rolling on the green as quickly as possible with the least amount of loft I can get away with.

Nice shooting. Did the pro change?

I had a short game lesson with the pro I saw last year but TBH he made it too complicated (not that I realised it at the time). This time I went to our asst pro at the club and he's made it so much simpler. I've never had a lesson with him before but I like the way he works and early signs are really encouraging.

Sounds like it has worked a treat.

We always say golf is about confidence and not being worried about the outcome. If your comfortable at holing putts from 6 foot in, then you will be more relaxed on your chips and not feeling you have to get it stone dead all the time.

Likewise if you are confident in your chipping then you are not going to feel under as much pressure with your approach shots and like you said actually hit some very good shots because of that confidence.

You will always be better of being as close as you can to the green. That 100yards thing is an old wives tale......

I think these kind of moments are what golf is all about. The great feeling of putting the work in and reaping the rewards on the course. Well played, long may it continue!

You clearly haven't seen me around the greens in the last two months.

It's not an old wives' tale if your short game is honking. I'm in a similar place to where Hawkeye was last week and contemplating a lesson. I'd back myself to get it closer from 100 yards than I would from inside 20.

Edit: cheers for sharing Hawkeye, gives hope to the rest of us. Glad you've found a solution

I'm in this situation as well.

Slightly more complicated - can manage a short chip around the green, but once I'm more than 10 yards away I'd be better off with a full swing. So I have a 'death zone' between 10 and 75 (full sw) from the green !

Have a lesson in mind, but various circumstances mean it will be a couple of weeks till I can fit it in along with a couple of hours after to practice, so in the meantime I'm laying up...

Strange how the pros tend to lay back rather than get it as close as possible. HOw often do you see them at places like Augusta on the 15th lay it back so they can hit full shot in as it is easier to control the spin.
