Reading today's paper (not saying which one) Monty himself has ruled out the 'playing captain' idea (rightly IMO. There are also supportive comments from Casey and Harrington who have played under his captaincy elsewhere.I bet he will be well up for it as unlikely to qualify and this puts him in teh spotlight which is what he enjoys.
I would feel sorry for Olazabal if he wanted it and felt it was his turn but I think the player attitude is key. If they are keen on Monty, it could be his time has come.
Forget Faldo - what's to say he'd be any better than last time, and Lyle has little support from players who barely know him.

Ollie would still get my vote.

I think Monty needs time out of the game before being Captain. To me, he has annoyed too many of the current crop of players. He will make a good captain one day, and will get the respect of future players (probably especially if they never played with him).

Not in America though. It would put a burden on the team, and a distraction they just don't need.

Out of interest:

Who was the last Euopean losing captain, who wasn't from the UK?

Ah that old pile of crap again,He couldnt have upset them that badly seeing as when they won a year later all the players were raving about Monty 'their pied piper'.I would have to say that listening to the top guys comments on him he would be a top selection among the tour players.

I hope not. To me, Monty is just not a very likeable person. He's sure to fall out with someone. We need a popular captain this time round, someone the Press, especially, can get behind. Faldo was lambasted by our own media from the time he was announced as Captain and we can do without the same again with Monty.
My vote goes to Ollie.
(Lyle's got no chance after his Open fiasco).

It begs the question - why is the Ryder Cup seen only as a one gig appointment?

In the case of an Olly, Langer, Faldo - why can't they get it for one in the US and one in Europe or like Bernhard Gallagher until the man has had enough or the Tour want a new face?

not for me . i think ryder cup captains have to be a a likeable guy like olazabal ..sam torrence...etc.etc., i can see monty having a fall out or two! he seems a stressy so and so!
And yet all evidence points to the exact opposite, that he is in fact very much liked by his contemporaries (in Europe at least) and has always been the consumate team man.

He should get it in 2014 in Scotland though, unless Sandy gets a very belated shout then. Lyle now, Olly in 2012 and Monty 2014
