Monty to be captain!

Would all depend on whether a/ he thinks he can qualify or b/ he can actually qualify.

I've not heard any comments from him other than he intends to be playing on the team.

Should be a good Captain whenever his time does come though.

I would give it to Woosnam or Lyle for 2010. Would still have liked Faldo to have another stab at it.

Almost looks a dead cert dunnit!!

Good reasoning behind it too. If Monty captained in the States he'd get a 2nd one ripped every time he got off the buggy. Ollie in USA is a better bet.

But I thought Monty's been saying that he wants to play the next 2 and Captain in 2014? Could he do both? Play and Captain? If he's got enough VC's? Not sure he could. Too much to do I think.

We wait and wonder..........

Not sure anyone can really play and captain and put total committment into both. Just too much to do. I'm not sure about Monty. Can't question his European Tour credentials but hasn't one a major, only limited success stateside and I think I'm right in saying not the greatest Ryder Cup record. Also not sure how much respect he actually has from within the camp.

For Monty to be named Captain for 2010 he would have to give up any claim to playing, I don't think the committee would accept anything else.

It's a different game from when we last had playing captains, much too much to do both well.

One problem, just who is going to be Monty's VC's?

great decision, the guy was made to play a part in the ryder cup.

He is argubly 1 of the best ryder cup players of all time.

To date he has been a member of the European team on 8 occasions and has never lost in a singles match. How many can say that ?

hes scored 23.5 points, 1.5 behind faldos record, which wont last long if montie gets another go.

GO MONTIE !!!!

p.s u either like him or loathe him.

I was under the impression that Monty has a very good Ryder Cup Record. Not that it really matters if he's going to be the one playing.

Thing is love him or loath him, he knows his own mind. and is single minded in his determination. Has to be good in any captain.I certainly think he'll be a much better captain choice than Faldo, any day of the week.

As for Vice captains, who knows... Perhaps Sandy Lyle & Thomas Bjorn.

Ahhh, The enigma that is Colin Montgomerie.
As a player, I love watching him. When he's on song, his iron play is nothing less than majestic. (Obviously the 18th at Winged Foot disnae count) and as for an interview (in the right mood) he's interesting and entertaining and I could listen all day.
However, he lets himself down badly on and off the course. (I think his misdemeanours have been comprehensivly covered here so I need not go into them)
I don't doubt that he will make an exceptional captain, but I think it depends greatly on how much respect he has from his fellow pros. His Ryder Cup record cannot be questioned and his commitment to it is absolute, but I just get the feeling that he's wound up a couple of his colleagues in the past and that may play a part in the effectiveness of his captaincy.

In short, I would definitely have him as captain, but not until Gleneagles in 2014.

I am not surprised at the latest indicators but Im neither concerned nor impressed should he have the job, I would still prefer ozzy, clark, langer or even a poorly sevi before going for Monty, but thats just me.

Read in the paper today they would be naming Monty 2010 and Ollie 2012 as captains for the next 2 cups but they could swap should either make the 2010 team.
Don't know what happens if they both make it but I don't think either will play their way on to the team.
Think 2010 is their last realistic chance of making the team so it could work althhough I wouldn't want Monty as captain in the states.

I am in complete agreement with A_F, Monty will one day be a good captain but not yet.

If he does get the job though I will still be happy- with monty at the helm you would be guaranteed drama even if it did come off the course!

I think he would rather opt out of this one though if he was honest with himself, his interview with golf night certainly didn't give away anything to suggest he had been told anything already- he just reiterated what we already knew and that was his desire to one day be captain.

p.s u either like him or loathe him.

LOATHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hate the man, never met him but I just cant stand him.

He was a great Ryder Cup player - but I dont think he will be a good captain, he will want to play not manage the team.

For me, that sums it up perfectly.

If he does not play his way into 2010 which i dought we have too many strong players at the moment,it will be good for him to be vice-captain to get a feel what being captain is all about just like Olly has done.

For me i would like Olly to be captain 2010,he seems like a father figure who the players will respect

not for me . i think ryder cup captains have to be a a likeable guy like olazabal ..sam torrence...etc.etc., i can see monty having a fall out or two! he seems a stressy so and so!

I agree with 2014, great to have a scot leading us out on Scotland. If you read the interview with him in this months GM I think it sounds like he's more interested in his playing credentials and would still rather be involved as a player then a captain at this stage.

In the Dubai coverage today they were in no doubt that Monty has got the job of captain & every player that was interviewed I saw about it, seemed very positive about Monty.

Harrington seemed to think that although Sandy Lyle deserved a captaincy, the problem is Sandy has missed the boat & is out of contact with most of todays field. Harrington was extremely positive about Monty being captain & wasn't afraid to give his reasons why.

I personally think Sandy should have got the job in Vallhalla instead of Faldo, but can understand why Faldo had been chosen.

I'm looking forward to 2010 & Monty as Captain.

Looking forward to see the field that qualifies & the captains picks, not to mention who is chosen to be vice captain. Will be good to see the Ryder cup back on UK soil again.
