An athlete is someone who does athletics, running, jumping, throwing,
A rower is someone who does rowing
Sir Chris Hoy is not an athlete, he is a cyclist and Rory is a golfer.

All are sportsmen

There can be no doubt that Mo Farah is one of the best athletes to represent this country ever, very possibly the best.
But you can't compare him to top competitors from other sports
Coz they are all different

Great race and great athlete - look forward to seeing what he does on the roads..

I think the reference to Jess is the gold she'll be awarded as a previous winner failed a drugs test?

Was lucky enough to be in the stadium last night to witness Mo's great run. Was an atmosphere I will never forget.

Is he this country's greatest athlete - purely on results categorically yes. Based on world records etc, then Daley Thompson, Seb Coe, Steve Ovett and Jonathan Edwards must be up there. Clearly a subjective argument, but Mo is right there with them.

The atmosphere on the telly sounded fantastic, he really got the crowd goin. It was odd coz I think it was Paula Radcliffe who said the other runners won't like that. But is there much differance when. Long jumpers do it to get them going

Ok great... phew! :)

Isn't it sad that was your first thought? No criticism but it shows where athletics is right now. I worry when I see a headline about Usain Bolt. I couldn't take it if he was a Lance as well.

Interesting point about Mo is that he doesn't actually do fast times in a record sense. Not particularly close either. Genius competition winner though and medals are what count. I don't see any other UK athlete coming close to his record. Coe is probably the closest imo but he is still way behind.

Im hoping that Bolt really is just the freak of nature that he appears to be. Noticeably taller than the competition but with the leg speed of shorted competitors.

I like Mo, I remember when the Mobot was conceived he was great on SkyTv.

I think where he rates will always be subjective. For me I think world/Olympic records are the epitome of athletic achievement. To at some point have been the best there ever was. somfor that reason he's nit top of my pile.

But he truly is a great athlete.

There is no doubt in my mind that Mo is up there with the likes of Hoy and Redgrave and imo they are the only 3 who are in with a shout of being the greatest Olympic athletes.

The atmosphere last night for the 10k was the best I have ever heard and we certainly have the best fans in this country for athletics.

I have been a runner for over 40 years and actually last night Mo ran a poor race although the result for me was never in doubt he is by far the best over the last 2 laps and I understand he ran a sub 50 second 400 recently.

A poor race I hear you say is he mad? well he actually nearly tripped or nearly was tripped 5 times and that was all due to the changes in pace but if you put yourself in the wrong place this happens.

The last lap was a shambles apart from the result and he was lucky not to go down he was actually looking over his left shoulder expecting someone to come on his inside when it was impossible that anyone was.

Addlington Fish? I had to laugh at that one.

Top top athlete and I really really like him...

However, his reluctance to did-associate himself from his coach does concern me..
The bloke has 'history'... Please walk away as soon as Mo...

For me Farah's achievements do make him greater than any other British athletics athlete or any British Olympian. That's not to detract from Redgrave, Hoy or Kenny (I had to look him up he's so anonymous) but running is truly a global sport open to anyone. Rowing and track cycling are elitist sports partaken by a few wealthy nations only and dependent on high levels of technology in the equipment. Still good sports but limited in terms of accessibility.
Fingers crossed Mo is 'unenhanced', I think he is clean but the business with the coach Salazar (who has form or suspicions of form) did raise a few eyebrows.
Some run last night.

Gonna stick my neck out and say Bolt will lose tonight. Just don't think he has any form this year. Hope I'm wrong.

Not sure about this. Had a look at some on-line definitions and this seems a common form:

The noun athlete comes from the Greek word athletes, meaning “contestant in the games.” Anyone who competes in sporting competitions can be called an athlete, but usually the term is reserved for people with a high level of dedication, skill and fitness.

I disagree, all sportsmen and women who are dedicated to their respective sports and are physically fit enough to compete at a high level wether that be in a professional or amateur basis, are athletes. The level of that athleticism is then defined by their success.

What your saying is that a rower like Redgrave is not an athlete, which he clearly is imo.

We are watching the World Championship ATHLETICS games, i'm not seeing rowing or cycling or anything else that does not involve, running, jumping or throwing.

its semantics I know, but IMO Steve Redgrave is not and never was an Athlete, Fantastic Rower , multi Olympian and true legend material, but doesn't do athletics, so not an athlete.
